Owls Claim Second Place in Team Finals at West Point

Ten Temple competitors advance to individual finals on Saturday

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Temple carried the momentum from last Saturday's season-opening victory at the Navy Open right into Friday night's meet in the West Point Open, as the Owls put up a score 342.300 in team competition to finish only behind Penn State (352.000). Junior Alex Tighe scored 14.300 on the high bar to claim the title in the event, while senior Matt Martin shared the title on the vault with Penn State's Tristan Duverglas, having like scores of 15.100 on the apparatus.
The Owls took second place in every event, helping them place ahead of host Army (326.200), Navy (324.00), Springfield (322.200), Arizona State (318.900) and Brockport (247.300).
When the individual competition takes place on Saturday, the Owls will have 10 of their competitors representing the team.
In addition to Tighe and Martin getting the bid into Saturday's event by virtue of earning titles in their events, Blake Collins, Taylor Brana, Evan Burke, Allan Malone, John Leonard, Dashiell Sears, Brett Statman and Brendan Williams all will compete.
On the vault, Statman followed up Martin's performance by placing eighth in the event with a score of 14.500.
Brana, who came away as Temple's top-finisher in three events, got a strong night underway with his fifth place finish on the parallel bars (14.300).
Later on in the evening Brana, reached top-eight scores on pommel horse and on rings. The native of Yavne, Israel tied with teammate Brendan Williams for third place overall (14.500) before claiming a fourth place score on rings (15.00).
Following Tighe in the high bar event was Malone in third place (14.100). Collins scored 13.700 to take a seventh place finish to become Temple's third competitor in Saturday's individual high bar finals.
In the night's final event, Burke demostrated an impressive routine, allowing him to earn second place overall with a score of 15.100.
Malone and Leonard had like scores of 14.600 on floor to round out the list of Temple competitors for individual finals.
On the day he graduated from Temple University with a degree in Kinesiology, senior and reigning ECAC Gymnast of the Week Adam Al-Rokh led the Owls in all-around with a third place score of 83.200. Senior Chris Mooney also had a top 10 finish in all-around, as he scored 80.200 on the night.
Temple will be back in action when the West Point Open resumes on Saturday night beginning at 7:00 p.m. Live coverage of the events can be seen here.
