2010 Saint Joseph's alum to coach for Owls in 2012

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Temple's head softball coach, Joe DiPietro, has announced the addition of Brooke Darreff to the coaching staff for 2012. Darreff is pursuing her master's degree in sports and exercise psychology, and takes the place of Jenna Best, who completed her master's requirements this past spring. She will be responsible for coaching the catchers and infielders.

Darreff is a 2010 graduate of Atlantic 10 rival Saint Joseph's, with a degree in psychology. The utility player enjoyed a decorated career with the Hawks, earning all conference honors on three occasions, including in 2008 when she garnered A-10 Player of the Year accolades. She is one of just six players in program history to amass 100 hits and 100 RBI. Her 17 career home runs are tied for fifth in team annals, while her .461 batting average in 2008 stands as a program record.

In the classroom, the Hartsville, Pa., native was a member of the Saint Joseph's Athletic Director's Honor Roll; was the recipient of the 2010 Class of 1950 Award, which is presented to the university's top senior female athlete; and served as Chair of SJU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

As a senior, Darreff was a recipient of the Atlantic 10 Sporting Award, presented annually to a male and female student-athlete who exemplifies good sportsmanship.

“I had recruited Brooke out of high school while I was at La Salle but she ultimately chose to go to Saint Joseph's,” said DiPietro. “She had an amazing career at Saint Joe's, highlighted by being the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year her sophomore year. She'll bring an enormous amount of energy and knowledge to the team. I'm thrilled to have Brooke on my staff.”

Temple will look to improve on its 22-23 (12-6 A-10) record from a season ago that saw the team advance to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time since 2007. The Owls finished the season fourth in the 11-team A-10 conference.

The Cherry and White open the season on February 24 when they head to Conway, S.C., for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleer Classic. First pitch of the season is slated for 11 a.m. against IPFW, before the squad takes on the host team at 3:30 p.m. that same day.
