THIS WEEK
Temple returns to action after a bye week and hosts South Florida in its annual Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 6. Kickoff is set for Noon at Lincoln Financial Field.
The BIG EAST Network (as well as ESPN3) will broadcast the game live with Eamon McAnaney calling the action, David Diaz-Infante providing color commentary, and Paul Carcatera with sideline reports. The game will be shown locally in Pennsylvania on WPVI (6ABC/Philadelphia), WTAE (ABC/Pittsburgh), WLYH (CW/Harrisburg/Lancaster), WQMY (MTN/Wilkes-Barres/Scranton), and WHVL (MTN/Altoona/Johnstown).
The Owls' radio broadcast will air on 1210 AM WPHT with Harry Donahue calling the play-by-play and Steve Joachim providing color analysis.
Under the direction of second-year head coach Steve Addazio, Temple stands 1-2 overall after a 24-13 loss at Penn State on Sept. 22. The 2012 Temple squad returns 35?lettermen, including nine starters. The Owls utilize a multiple offense and a 4-3 defense.
Senior RB Matt Brown (Baltimore, Md.) is the Owls' top rusher with 202 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries. Sophomore Jalen Fitzpatrick (Harrisburg, Pa.) is the top receiver with six catches for 128 yards and a touchdown. Junior QB Chris Coyer (Oak Hill, Va.) is 25-of-55 for 363 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 197 yards and a TD. Redshirt freshman LB Nate D. Smith (Highland Park, N.J.) is the top defender with 21 tackles, including a team-best 20 solo takedowns, three forced fumbles, and a break-up.
In this week's national rankings, Temple is ranked among the nation's Top 25 in two categories, including No. 10 punt returns (17.83) and No. 17 in turnover margin (1.33). Individually, senior RB Matt Brown is No. 6 in punt returns (21.40) and No. 7 in all-purpose running (181.00). Senior PK Brandon McManus (Hatfield, Pa.) is No. 5 in field goals (2.00) and No. 4 in punting (47.13).
Under the tutelege of third-year coach Skip Holtz, South Florida is 2-3 overall (0-1 in BIG EAST play) after a 30-17 loss to No. 4 Florida State. The Bulls return 15 starters to their multiple offense and 4-3 defense.
South Florida is ranked No. 21 in sacks allowed (1.00). Senior QB B.J. Daniels is No. 24 in total offense (311.20), while junior WR Terrence Mitchell is No. 32 in punt returns (11.86).
Senior RB Demetrius Murray is the Bulls' top back with 247 yards and three touchdowns on 63 carries. Sophomore WR Andre Davis has 234 receptions for 312 yards and three touchdowns. Senior QB?B.J. Daniels is 90-of-162 for 1,285 yards and nine touchdowns while rushing 61 times for 271 yards and three touchdowns. Junior LB DeDe Latimore leads all defenders with 39 tackles, 4.5 TFL,2.5 sacks, a blocked kick, and a break-up.
HOMECOMING HISTORY
Over the last six seasons, the Temple Owls are 5-1 in homecoming games, including three consecutive wins. Last year TU shut out Buffalo 34-0.
In 2010, Temple beat Bowling Green, 28-27, as DB Marquise Liverpool broke up a two-point conversion as time expired to preserve the win.
In 2009, the Owls claimed a 27-13 win over Army. TU suffered its only homecoming loss to Western Michigan, 7-3, in 2008. In 2007, Temple beat Northern Illinois, 16-15.
HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES
During halftime of Saturday's game, six individuals and one team will be inducted into the Temple Athletics' Hall of Fame. The Class of 2012 consists of Danny Akerman (men's gymnastics), Marc Jackson (men's basketball), Lance Johnstone (football), Peter Moore (baseball), Jason Read (men's crew), and Doug Shobert (football), as well as the 1988 Women's Lacrosse NCAA Championship team.
One of the top defensive players in Temple football history, Johnstone still owns the record for solo tackles in a career with 288, while his 429 total tackles ranks second in the school record book. The stellar linebacker earned Football News Freshman All-America honors in 1993 and followed that with second-team All-BIG EAST honors as a sophomore and junior and first-team accolades as a senior. The Philadelphia native led the Owls in tackles each of his final three seasons (1993-95). As a junior, he set the school record for solo tackles in a game with 16 against Pittsburgh. He capped his final season with an invitation to the Senior Bowl. Selected by the Oakland Raiders in the 1996 NFL Draft, he played eight seasons in the pros, three with the Raiders and five with the Minnesota Vikings.
One of the most decorated quarterbacks in Temple football history, Shobert earned Associated Press All-America honorable mention and second-team All-East honors as a junior in 1971. A team captain as a senior in 1972, he still owns the Owls' career completion percentage record (57%), while his 3,913 passing yards rank sixth on the all-time list. His 26 career touchdown passes also rank sixth at Temple. The Chalfont, Pa., native led the Cherry and White in passing in each of his final three seasons, leading the Owls to winning records each year. Temple's record during Shobert's time behind center was 18-9-1. His two best passing yardage games came as a senior when he threw for 227 yards against Boston College and 230 yards against Delaware.

WELCOME BACK TO THE BIG EAST
Temple's game with South Florida opens a new era for TU football. The Owls return to the BIG EAST Conference after a seven-year absence.
After playing the last five seasons in the Mid-American Conference, Temple re-joins the BIG EAST Conference in 2012. The Owls previously played in the BIG EAST [1991-2004] for football only.
All other sports, including Temple's men's and women's basketball programs, will leave the Atlantic 10 Conference and begin play in the BIG EAST starting in 2013-14. This will be the first time in Temple's history in which its intercollegiate athletic programs will compete in one conference.
