Men's Soccer Takes Sole Possession Of First Place In The A-10 With 2-0 Win At UMass
10.14.12 | Men's Soccer
AMHERST, Mass. – Temple Men's Soccer (7-4-2, 3-0-1) captured sole possession of first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference on Sunday afternoon by shutting out the Massachusetts Minutemen (4-6-2, 1-2-0), 2-0 on the road at Rudd Field. Senior Cody Calafiore got the Owls on the board first, scoring just over five minutes into the second half when junior Vaughn Spurrier fed him the ball for the one-timer blast that ended up in the back of the net. Adding to the lead, senior Homero Rodriguez registered his first goal of the season to widen the gap with only 10 and a half minutes remaining.
Spurrier, who came into the weekend tied for 11th in the nation in assists, while being tied for 17th for assists per game, had a hand in both goals Sunday to run his total up to eight in 2012, moving him into a seven-way tie for third place on Temple's all-time list for assists in a single season.
It was once again another balanced match in terms of scoring chances.
UMass brought the pressure throughout the first half, slamming seven of their nine shots on goal. The Owls scattered 12 over the course of the match, having two of their three shots directed at the goal find the back of the net.
Temple's defense tightened up in the second half and was more stingy that it has been all season, as the unit limited UMass to just two shot in the entire second half- none of which were on goal.
Continuing to make the most of his opportunities this season, sophomore Dan Scheck got the nod to start in between the posts. His shutout effort, which included five saves—all coming in the first half—helped the Owls get through the weekend A-10 road trip without conceiting a goal. Temple now has five shutouts on the year, tying last season's total.
Scheck, who has three shutouts to his credit, now owns a goals against average of 0.46 through five games this season.
For the second straight game, freshman Jared Martinelli, who leads the team in scoring with 19 points, was held scoreless and to just two hacks at the ball.
The concentration on Martinelli, allowed Calafiore to once again get more opportunities, as he led the team with four shots on the day.
With the victory, Temple improves to 7-4-2 on the year and is undefeated in its last five games and has won six of its last eight. Holding an undefeated record of 3-0-1 in A-10 play, the Owls are still off to their best start in league play since 2003 when they were also 3-0-1 through the first four games.
The upcoming slate does not get any easier for the Owls, as they return home looking to maintain their perfect 5-0-0 record at the Ambler Sports Complex when they host A-10 newcomer Butler on Friday at 2:30 p.m. before closing out their third A-10 weekend against the Saint Louis Billikens Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
