TEMPLE NOTES...
Already off to their best start ever at the Ambler Sports Complex with a 5-0-0 record, Temple, who is ranked No. 7 in the Mid-Atlantic region of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's latest poll, is also holding a 3-0-1 record in A-10 play, which matches its best start through four league games since 2003. Since returning from their trip out to California, where they dropped a pair of contests, 13-year head coach David MacWilliams has guided his team to six wins over the last eight games, including a current five-game unbeaten streak.
Junior Vaughn Spurrier moved into a seven-way tie for third place on Temple's all-time list for assists in a single season after dishing out two helpers in Sunday's game at Massachusetts. With eight assists on the year, the Cleveland, Ohio native is tied for sixth in the nation and first in the A-10. Spurrier's next assist will move into a tie for second place with Tony Donatelli for most assists in a single season.
Helping the team come away with a four-point weekend on the road, senior Cody Calafiore led the Owls with nine shots through two games, including one that served as the game-winning goal over UMass. Freshman Jared Martinelli has carried the Owls' offense this season, having six goals and 19 points on the year. The rookie midfielder from Mechanicsburg, Pa. is tied for 30th in the nation and fourth in the A-10 in points, while ranking first in the conference in shots and shots per game. Nearly two-thirds of Martinelli's production has come in home games this year. Through the five contests in Ambler, Martinelli has accumulated 12 of his 19 points, including three goals and six assists.
Goalkeepers Bobby Rosato and Dan Scheck stepped up big for the Owls last weekend in the team's scoreless draw at Rhode Island and 2-0 win at UMass. The platoon of Rosato and Scheck in between the posts has led Temple to five shutouts this season, matching its total from a season ago. One more clean sheet will give the team its most in two years.
