NEW YORK – Two Temple football players have earned national honors from the Metropolitan New York Football Writers' Association (MNYFWA) following the 17-14 overtime win at Connecticut.
Senior PK/P Brandon McManus (Hatfield, Pa.) has been named the Specialist of the Week, while true freshman LB Tyler Matakevich (Stratford, Conn.) has been named the Rookie of the Week.
At Connecticut, McManus made an extra point with 19 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game and force overtime. He nailed a 29-yard field goal in overtime to give the Owls their second overtime win in school history and first back-to-back wins in BIG EAST play in school history.
Against the Huskies, McManus also punted eight times for 341 yards (42.6 average) and kicked off three times for 195 yards (65.0 average) and a touchback.
McManus was also honored with BIG EAST Specialist of the Week honors, National Specialist of the Week honors by the College Football Performance Awards, and ESPN Helmet Stickers.
The MNYFWA honor is the second for McManus this season who also earned recognition on Sept. 4.
Matakevich made his second career start and led all players with a career-high 19 tackles and a break-up in the win over UConn. The true freshman is one of 18 Temple freshmen to play this fall.
Matakevich was named to the BIG EAST's five-man Honor Roll. The MNYFWA honor is his first.
