Three Men's Tennis Players Active in Qualifying Round of USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional

Belkssir wins first match, trio all fail to qualify

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Hicham Belkssir, Nicolas Paulus and Hernan Vasconez were all active in the qualifying round of the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional singles bracket on Thursday afternoon. The event is being held at the University of Virginia on October 18-22. The trio was competing for a chance to enter the main draw on Friday morning.
Belkssir won his first collegiate match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Morgan State's Richard King in the first round. The freshman came up against Andreas Urrea of Saint Joseph's in the second round, and dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to the cross-city rival to fall out of the singles running.
Paulus and Vasconez were both stopped in the opening round. Paulus came back from a first set 6-4 loss to win the second, 6-3, but ultimately fell 6-3 in the third to Kamal Patel of UMBC. Vasconez dropped a 6-3, 7-6 decision to Norfolk State's Samuel Lemberger.
Senior Kacper Rams and sophomore Kristian Marquart will try their luck in the singles main draw on Friday morning. Rams received a bye in the first round and will face the winner of a match between Dan Elston of Longwood and Norfolk State's Daniel Grauel. Marquart goes up against James Madison's Hugo Ramadier in the round of 128 at 10 a.m. Friday morning.
Rams and Marquart will then team up to play in the doubles draw, squaring off against Zvonimir Podvinsky and Dante Terenzio of Old Dominion. Also playing doubles are Paulus and Vasconez, who will face JMU's Ramadier and Florent Sentenac. Both matches are scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.
