No. 23 Saint Louis Defeats Men's Soccer, 3-1
10.21.12 | Men's Soccer
AMBLER – Separated by a point of each other in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings, sole possession of first place was at stake when Temple Men's Soccer and the No. 23 Saint Louis Billikens took the field of the Ambler Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. Reserve player Adnan Gabelic had a hand in three goals for Saint Louis, carrying the Billikens to a 3-1 win over the Owls with a goal and two assists. Freshman Jared Martinelli got the Owls on the board in the 83rd minute when redshirt sophomore Chas Wilson fed him his seventh goal of the season, giving him the most goals by a Temple player since 2008.
Gabelic inked his name of the score sheet for the first time on the day when his shot was deflected off his teammate Raymond Lee's foot before going into the net for the game's first score. Coming out of the halftime huddle, Gabelic raced down the field, where he fed a pass to David Graydon for a shot that beat junior keeper Bobby Rosato, 29 seconds into the second session. In the 76th minute, Gabelic claimed a four-point day when he put his foot on a ball that came to him inside the box and scored from Jon Roeckle.
Temple was held to three shots in the second half before Martinelli got the Owls on the board.
Martinelli, who has registered at least one point in every home game this season, now has 23 points on the year and 16 in games at the Ambler Sports Complex this season.
Narrowing the gap to a two-goal deficit, the Owls used the momentum that came off of Martinelli's goal in an effort to make the same kind of comeback that Butler pulled on them Friday, but in a much shorter time frame.
Martinelli bolted down the field moments after the ensuing kickoff and nearly brought the match within a goal, but SLU keeper Nick Shackleford played the shot perfectly to make the save.
Temple continued to pressure the Billiken zone in the final minutes, as it fired four shot to Saint Louis' one in the final seven minutes.
From the moment the ball was kicked to start the game, the Billikens executed hard and demonstrated the fast speed of their attack.
Despite their speed and quick ball movement, the Owls proved to match up well, keeping te Billikens from getting a significant scoring chance.
SLU's Robbie Kristo blasted a shot over the Owls' goal less than two minutes into the game, marking the only attempt the Billikens had for the first 20 minutes of play.
Continuing to play with a burst of speed, the Billikens outshot the Owls 14-7 in the second half, giving them a 24-14 edge for the game in the shots category. Rosato finished with six saves, while Shackelford kept three of the four shots that came his way out of the net.
The loss does quite a bit of damage to the Owls, as it ends the team's undefeated start at the Ambler Sports Complex (5-1-1) and in A-10 play. Sitting just one point out of first place in the conference standing entering the match, Temple falls to the No. 4 seed with three games remaining.
Temple, now 7-5-3 overall and 3-1-1 in A-10 play, will now get ready for Friday evening's match in the Bronx where it will take on the Fordham Rams at 7:00 p.m.
