Lister & Calafiore Stun St. Bonaventure As Time Expires To Give Men's Soccer Dramatic, 2-1, Victory In OT
10.5.12 | Men's Soccer
Interviews: Coach MacWilliams | J. Lister
AMBLER – Time was ticking away and the countdown to the end of the first overtime session was being called, 'five, four, three..'. Looking for one last chance before the final horn, senior Cody Calafiore knighted and weaved through the St. Bonaventure defense, allowing him to send a feed inside the box to junior Jake Lister, who slammed the ball off his head and into the net to give the Owls a dramatic come-from-behind, 2-1, victory at the Ambler Sports Complex with just three seconds remaining.
With the win, Temple Men's Soccer gets off to a 1-0-0 start in Atlantic 10 Conference play, while moving over the .500 mark and improving to 5-4-1 on the year.
From start to finish, it was a physical, competitive and an exciting battle.
Moments after the opening kick-off, the Bonnies (2-9-0, 0-1-0) made the first adjustment to the scoreboard in a way that caught the Owls off guard.
In the 2nd minute of play, junior Emmett O'Connor collected a ball that was blocked and moved inside the box. Throwing a feed past Temple defenders to junior James Reed, the Bonnies stunned the Owls by taking a very early 1-0 lead.
As mentioned, Friday's match was the start of A-10 play, which always adds a boost in aggression between the teams.
Following the St. Bonaventure goal, it didn't take long for the intensity and physicality to elevate.
Over the course of the first half, nearly every whistle warranted a stoppage, as the Owls and Bonnies combined for 17 fouls and seven cards. Although the Bonnies were called for nine of those fouls and four of those cards, the Owls were the ones at a disadvantage for the remainder of the contest, as it lost junior Andrew Dodds for an infraction that yielded him a red card in the 39th minute.
Even with transition of ball movement being interrupted by foul and warning whistles and playing down a man for the final 61 minutes, the Owls maintained possession for a majority of the match and outshot the Bonnies 22-12 during that time frame.
Continuing to knock at the door and flood chances in front of St. Bonaventure keeper Able Bautista, the Owls' challenges paid off in the 64th minute when freshman Jared Martinelli's shot was deflected off the foot of junior Nolan Hemmer, who tapped it before being pushed in by senior Ryan Bradbury to put the game at a dead-even 1-1 game.
Martinelli, who came into the contest ranked second in the nation among rookies in points per game, claimed his 16th point of the season with his sixth assist, which ties junior Vaughn Spurrier for the team's most. With 12 shots in the contest, Martinelli set a new career-high in the category. The Mechanicsburg, Pa. native has registered at least one point in seven of the last eight games.
Sophomore Dan Scheck came into the game in the 52nd minute and was nothing less than a wall in between the goal posts. Scheck picked up the first win of his collegiate career by making saves on all seven shots that were directed his way.
Holding a 4-0-0 record at home and getting off to a 1-0-0 start in league play, the Owls continue the conference slate on Sunday when the Duquesne Dukes roll into the Ambler Sports Complex. Kick-off time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Note: Due to rain in the forecast, Sunday's game time may be moved up to an earlier time. Please be sure to check Owlsports.com for any possible gametime changes.
