Lister & Martinelli Lead Men's Soccer To 2-1 Victory Over Duquesne
10.7.12 | Men's Soccer
AMBLER – The Owls improved to 2-0-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play on Sunday, by defeating the Duquesne Dukes, 2-1, at the Ambler Sports Complex. After playing hero on Friday against St. Bonaventure, junior Jake Lister was a catalyst for Temple once again on Sunday, as him and freshman Jared Martinelli each tallied a three-point day.
Temple not only remained undefeated in league play, but also won its third straight game and improved to 5-0-0 at the Ambler Sports Complex this season. The Owls are now 6-4-1 on the year.
After giving the Owls their first goal back in the 37th minute and with the game tied, courtesy of a Joshua Patterson goal for Duquesne(4-8-0, 1-1-0) in the 47th minute, Lister got the lead back for the Owls when he sent in a hard blast in from the right side to Martinelli, who directed it off his head and into the net.
A slow tempo first half suddenly changed when Martinelli set up for a corner kick during the 37th minute. Lister checked into the game and got in perfect position for the feed, that was thrown inside the box. Lister found space around him and got a kick on the ball to beat Duquesne keeper Sam Frymier to his right, giving the Owls the 1-0 lead.
With a three-point day, Martinelli continues to impress, as he now has 19 points in his rookie season. Entering the weekend, the Mechanicsburg, Pa. native was ranked second in the nation among rookies in points per game. Lister has seven points on the year, five of which have come in A-10 play—giving him the most on the team.
Coming out of the halftime huddle, the Dukes pressured more than it had during the first have and began generating more opportunities. Less than three minutes into the second half, Simon Gomez made a pass through Temple defenders to Patterson. Whiffing on the first shot, Patterson got a second chance and put it behind Rosato to even the match.
For the duration of the first half, Temple held possession for a majority of the half and tortured the Dukes with chances. Duquesne was limited to just two shots in the half, both of which were strong opportunities. Temple junior netminder Bobby Rosato came up with a big save in the 19th minute when he turned away Simon Gomez, who launched a shot from 30 yards into his chest. Temple had 14 of its 20 shots in the first half. With 11 being directed on goal, Frymier made stops on nine of the Owls' opportunities.
Physicality was moderate, as Duquesne was called for 13 fouls, while Temple got whistled for 11. Tree cards were issued during the match, with two going to the Dukes and one to the Owls.
Temple will take its undefeated A-10 record on road next weekend when it heads to the New England region to take on Rhode Island Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Massachusetts on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
