St. Bonaventure Scores Late To Hand Women's Soccer Frustrating, 1-0, Loss

10.5.12 | Women's Soccer

OLEAN, N.Y. – For Temple Women's Soccer, it was the same story with the same ending that it has been in games for the team recently. Playing St. Bonaventure in the first of two Atlantic 10 matches on the road this weekend, the Owls continued to put forth the hard-nosed defensive effort that they have demonstrated all season, but the offensive struggles continued and became even more frustrating. In the 86th minute, Alyssa Lapp broke a scoreless bout when she headed a ball that came off a cross from the right side from Maureen Madden. The ball was lunged at the hands of freshman goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff, who couldn't hang on, causing the Bonnies to escape with a 1-0 win.

The goal by the Bonnies was devastating for the Owls to witness. Just seconds prior to that, senior Kate Yurkovic had a blast down the other end that was nailed right into the chest of St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Kathryn Kerkman. Surviving that scare, the Bonnies moved out of their own zone and quickly assured Temple's momentum would come to a hault, as they cashed in on their own chance.

Temple finished with five shots on the day; four by Yurkovic and the other by senior Casey Greco, who put up the Owls only other strong chance in the 49th minute, but Kerkman made the stop to earn the shutout for the Bonnies. St. Bonaventure, who committed 15 fouls to Temple's 10, blasted 14 shots in the game, while the Temple goalkeeping unit, which entered the match ranked 12th in the nation in save percentage surrendered the only goal needed to determine a victor.

Redshirt senior Tara Murphy, who started the match, made stops on all two chances that came her way before she was warranted a red card in the 61st minute for tackling. Kerkhoff, who has been tough to beat all season, came in for the Owls and turned away two of the three shots that came her way.

The Owls drop to 3-8-2 on the year, while still looking for an A-10 win (0-2-0). With little time for turnaround, Temple will get right back to work when it takes on Duquesne Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Rooney Field.

Temple has now played eight straight games that have been decided by one goal or less. The Owls have also been involved in 11 straight matches in which only one of the teams scores. Saturday, Oct. 7 will mark one year since the Owls scored more than one goal in a match.
