PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championships begin today in Pittsburgh, Pa., on the campus of Duquesne University, and fifth-seeded Temple (18-10, 8-6) is set to face fourth-seeded Duquesne (22-10, 9-5) at 7:00 p.m. To follow all the action at the A-10 Tournament, including webcasts, live stats and more, check out the A-10 Tournament Central website.
At 18-10 overall, the Owls have recorded the most wins for the program since 2005 when the team was 23-10 overall and finished as runner-up at the A-10 Tournament. Temple won three of its last four regular-season matches to secure its first A-10 Tournament berth since 2009.
The program is making its 25th appearance in the A-10 Tournament, and has won four A-10 titles, the most recent of those coming in 2002 when the team later advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
The Owls were picked to finish 11th of 12 teams in the A-10 Preseason Poll, but placed six spots ahead of the prediction and are the fifth seed of six teams heading into the weekend.
Senior Chelsea Tupuola, the 2012 A-10 Libero of the Year, has recorded 1,385 digs in her career to rank seventh all-time at Temple. Her 5.30 digs per set this season lead all players in the Atlantic 10 and rank 34th among all players in NCAA?Division I.
Junior outside hitter Gabriella Matautia, named yesterday to the A-10 First Team, ranks second in the A-10 and 51st in the nation with 4.05 kills per set. She also leads the conference and ranks 35th in the nation with 0.39 service aces per set (39 total).
Elyse Burkert, a junior outside hitter, is a reigning co-Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week, and her 3.92 kills per set rank fourth in the Atlantic 10 and 68th in the nation. Sophomore setter Tiffany Connatser is averaging 10.93 assists per set to rank second in the A-10 and 40th in NCAA Division I.
With 17.96 digs per set as a team this season, Temple leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 17th in the nation. Of the 18 wins for Temple this season, an impressive 12 of them have been 3-0 sweeps, including two of the last three.
In the Owls' match against Duquesne earlier this season, the Dukes came away with a 3-0 win, but Temple leads Duquesne 35-6 in the all-time series. The two teams split matches last season with Duquesne winning 3-0 on its home court, and the Owls winning 3-2 at home.
