2012 Virginia alum joins Owls coaching staff
PHILADELPHIA – Temple's head softball coach, Joe DiPietro, has announced the addition of Giannina Cipolloni to the coaching staff for 2013. Cipolloni joins the staff as a volunteer assistant coach.
Cipolloni is a 2012 graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in psychology. The Philadelphia native will be responsible for coaching the outfielders as well as the slap hitters.
“Adding Giannina to our staff this fall has been awesome,” said DiPietro. “She's handling all of our slappers as well as the outfielders and has done a great job. Giannina has brought a lot of different ideas to the team and it's been great having her with us. I know we'll be a better team with her on staff.”
During her senior season at UVA, the team captain set the Virginia career stolen bases record and finished her career with 89 steals. Her total of 31 swipes in her final year ranks second on the school's single season list, behind only her school record mark of 32 set in 2011. A four-year starter at centerfield, Cipolloni hit .286 as a senior and led the Cavaliers with 46 hits, 25 RBI and eight doubles. For the second-straight year, she was named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team.
As a junior, Cipolloni hit .303 and led the Cavaliers with 32 stolen bases, a mark that ranked second among ACC players. She had the most hits (54) and runs (33) on the squad and contributed eight doubles and two triples. She committed just one error in all 55 starts in centerfield for a .987 fielding percentage. She was tabbed a member of the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team for her efforts.
As a sophomore, Cipolloni was a starter in all 57 games for Virginia and tied for second in the ACC with five triples. Her rookie season was also impressive as she led the first-year class in batting average (.244) and hits (32), and ranked eighth nationally with six triples.
Cipolloni is a product of Philadelphia's Nazareth Academy, where she was a two-time all-state selection and four-time Catholic Academy League All-Star. She helped lead her team to back-to-back league championships in 2007 and 2008.
Temple, which made its second-straight appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship in 2012, will look to improve on its 27-22 (12-6 A-10) record from a season ago. The 2013 Owls get the season underway on February 22 at the Elon Invitational, squaring off against Hampton in a 6:45 p.m. game.
