Four Temple Owls Named to Philadelphia Inquirer’s Academic All-Area Football Team

Owls' Montel Harris Named Performer of the Year
PHILADELPHIA – Four Temple Owls have been named to the 2012 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football Team, including senior RB Montel Harris (Jacksonville, Fla.) who garnered Performer of the Year honors.
Junior WR Ryan Alderman (Downingtown, Pa.), senior DB Justin Gildea (Hollidaysburg, Pa.), Harris, and senior OL Martin Wallace (New York, N.Y.) are among the 24 student-athletes named to the team of players from the seven Delaware Valley institutions that sponsor football. The team is selected by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Alderman, Gildea, and Wallace repeat as recipients of the academic award. The trio also was honored in 2011. Gildea and Wallace are three-time recipients, also earning recognition in 2010. The Academic Team began during the 2005 season.
Alderman has a 3.62 GPA in finance. A 2012 and 2011 Capital One Academic All-America nominee, he has been cited on the President's Honor Roll three times. Alderman, who has played in every game of his collegiate career, was honored with the 2011 MAC Commissioner's Award for a 3.5+ GPA as well as earning 2011 MAC Honor Roll and Academic All-MAC accolades. Also playing on the punt, kickoff return, and punt return units, Alderman played in all 11 games with two starts in 2012.
Gildea has a 3.15 GPA in legal studies. Cited on the 2012 and 2011 Athletic Director's Honor Roll, the team captain started 31 consecutive games, the most of any Owl. Named to the 2011-12 MAC Honor Roll, Gildea started 10 games at strong safety in 2012. Also playing on the kickoff, punt, field goal defense units, he led the Owls with a career-high 10 tackles at Penn State.
Harris has a 3.84 GPA. He received his degree in communications from Boston College in 2012 and is pursuing a master's degree in adult & organizational development from Temple. A first-team All-BIG EAST honoree, Harris led the nation with 27 career 100-yard rushing games, including five with TU this fall. He led Temple and the BIG EAST in rushing with 1,054 yards and 12 touchdowns on 196 carries on the season. Harris rushed for career highs of 351 yards and seven touchdowns (both school records and BIG EAST records) at Army.
Wallace has a 3.20 GPA in criminal justice. Cited on the 2012 and 2011 Athletic Director's Honor Roll, he was a 2011-12 MAC Honor Roll and 2010 Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention selection. A team captain and second-team All-BIG EAST honoree, Wallace started all 11 games at right tackle this fall and has started 26 consecutive games. He was the only returning starter on a young offensive line in 2012.
