3.30.12 | Softball
White drives in three in game one, Prezioso with three RBI in nightcap
AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple softball team won its fifth and sixth straight games, improving to 16-11 overall and 4-0 in Atlantic 10 play, with a two-game sweep over visiting La Salle at Ambler Field on Friday afternoon. The Owls won the opener 4-3 and took the nightcap in convincing fashion, 8-0.
Sophomore pitcher Brooklin White was at it again, throwing a solid game while also letting her bat do some work. The right-hander carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before surrendering four hits, while also hitting the first homerun of her career in picking up the win.
TU scored one in the bottom of the first when senior Rachel Knable singled up the middle to drive in Ali Robinson, who had reached on an error to open the inning. The Owls would collect four more hits over the next three innings, getting seven baserunners during that time, but couldn't manufacture a run.
With two outs and two runners on in the bottom of the fifth, White stepped in for her third at bat of the game. The pitcher had struck out her first two times, but this time sent the first pitch over the left field fence to put her squad ahead 4-0.
La Salle (3-21) rallied in the seventh, collecting three hits and scoring three times. Kati Cooper led off with a walk, Megan Hodgson singled up the middle, and Alyssa Bitsimis drew a walk to load the bases. Liz Reed hit a ball sharply toward third base, and it was just out of the reach of a leaping Samantha Schoell, allowing two runs to come in. Bitsimis got caught off the bag at third on the play for the first out. Kristin Travers made a pinch hit appearance and clubbed a double to left center to score Reed and make it a 4-3 game.
Temple head coach Joe DiPietro brought on freshman Jessica Mahoney in relief, and the rookie did her job. She sat Linnette Siedler down looking and induced a fly ball from Breanna DiTommaso to end the rally and secure the 4-3 win.
White (9-5) struck out six in her 6.1 innings of work. Alicia Aughton (3-10) gave up 11 hits, while striking out four in 6.0 innings.
Knable finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Kayla Cook also went 2-for-3.
In the nightcap, TU scored early and often on its way to an 8-0 mercy rule victory. The Owls got three runs in each of the first two innings, and then added one in the third and another in the fourth, while shutting out the Explorers.
Sarah Prezioso went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Schoell was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs batted in. Knable stayed hot, going 1-for-3 and driving in two.
Capri Catalano (4-5) got the win, her second-straight shutout, going 5.0, allowing three hits and striking out two. La Salle starter Travers (0-10) only lasted 1.0 inning, giving up two hits and three runs. Aughton came on in relief, allowing six hits, five runs and fanning two in 3.0 innings of work.
