Walks and Errors Doom Softball in 3-2 Loss at Dayton

Pasquale goes 2-for-4 with two doubles in loss
DAYTON, Ohio – Sophomore Stephanie Pasquale went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI, but it was not enough as the Temple softball team fell in an early hole and dropped a 3-2 decision to Dayton at UD Softball Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Flyers capitalized on seven walks and two TU errors in the game.
The game did not start off the way Temple (17-17, 5-4 A-10) would have liked with Dayton (15-22, 3-6 A-10) taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A leadoff walk and two singles led to the early lead for the host team.
The Flyers extended the lead in the third, scoring two more in a troubled inning for the Owls. Sophomore pitcher Brooklin White got in a bind early in the frame, giving up two singles and two walks, the second free pass forcing in the second run of the game. Freshman Jessica Mahoney came on in relief and struck out two Dayton players to get out of the inning, but not before a TU fielding error allowed another run across.
TU had a great opportunity in the fifth when Pasquale led off the frame with a double to left centerfield. One out later, senior Meaghan Marley drew a walk to put runners on first and second, but Dayton pitcher Kayla English sat the next two batters down on a line out and a strikeout to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Owls finally got on the board in the top of the seventh. After two-straight singles from senior Christina Sykora and junior Ali Robinson, Dayton got two outs and looked poised to end the game with the shutout. Pasquale changed that when she sent a bases clearing double, her second of the game, to the centerfield fence to cut it to 3-2. English induced a popup from the next batter, however, and the Flyers came away with the one run win.
White (10-8) lasted just 2.1 innings in suffering the loss, giving up six hits, three runs and walking five. Mahoney pitched well in relief, allowing just two hits in 3.2 innings of work, fanning three and walking two. English (5-7) went the distance for the win, giving up eight hits, two hits, three walks and two strikeouts.
In addition to Pasquale, Sykora also collected multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Temple will face Dayton again in a noon game on Saturday.
