Prezioso's Bat Hot In Softball's Doubleheader Sweep at Rhode Island

4.20.12 | Softball

Owls win opener, 7-4; take nightcap in five innings, 10-1

KINGSTON, R.I. – Sophomore Sarah Prezioso went 5-for-7 on the day, leading the Temple softball team to a doubleheader sweep at Rhode Island on Friday afternoon. The Owls defeated the Rams 7-4 in game one and 10-1 in the nightcap of a critical stretch of Atlantic 10 games.

TU (22-18, 7-4) scored first in the opener, getting a run in the top of the first. Junior Ali Robinson led off with a single, and one out later, Prezioso drove her in with a double to right field.

Rhode Island (18-26, 2-8) grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third with three runs on three hits in the frame. The Cherry and White responded with a two-run fourth to knot it up, both coming on a two-run homerun by Meaghan Marley, but the host team again went on top with a solo run in the bottom of the fifth.

With URI leading 4-3, Temple went on to score two in each of the final innings to get the come-from-behind win. In the sixth, a single and two walks loaded the bases, and Prezioso delivered a two-run, two-out single to give her squad the 5-4 lead.

The visitors got two insurance runs in the seventh, taking advantage of one hit, a Christina Sykora single, and two Rhode Island errors in the inning.

Pitcher Brooklin White (12-8) sat the Rams down in order in the bottom of the seventh to get the win. White allowed seven hits, struck out three and walked three in the complete game victory. Sam Bedore (9-10) took the loss, going 5.2 innings, allowing three hits, striking out two and walking seven.

In game two, five Temple players collected multiple hits on the way to a mercy rule shortened 10-1 win. It was a scoreless game until the fourth, but the Owls scored four in that frame, including a Robinson grand slam, and then tacked on six in the fifth to end the game.

Prezioso, who was showing no effects of a hand injury suffered in Temple's games on Wednesday, was 3-for-3 with a run batted in, while Robinson was 3-for-4 with the homer and four RBI. Marley (2-for-3), Rachel Knable (2-for-3) and Samantha Schoell (2-for-4) also had more than one hit.

Capri Catalano (6-7) was the winner on the mound, going 5.0 innings with five hits, three strikeouts and two walks. Erika Szymanski (4-9) took the loss, giving up 14 hits while striking out four and walking one.

Temple returns to the field on Sunday in a doubleheader at league-leading Massachusetts. First pitch of game one is slated for noon.
