Marley and Schoell earn academic all-conference
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Temple softball's Stephanie Pasquale and Sarah Prezioso have been named to the Atlantic 10 Softball All-Conference First Team in voting conducted among the conference's head coaches, announced today by the league office. In addition, Meaghan Marley and Samantha Schoell were named to the Academic All-Conference Team in voting conducted among the conference's sports information directors.
Sara Plourde of Massachusetts has been named the A-10 Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, the pitcher award being her third-straight, Quianna Diaz-Patterson, also of UMass, has been tabbed the Rookie of the Year, and the Minutewomen made it a clean sweep when head coach Elaine Sortino picked up the Coach of the Year honor.
Pasquale and Prezioso, both second-team all-conference members a year ago, become the first two-time all league selections for Temple since the 2002 and 2003 seasons when Bari Flueger earned her second and third spots on the team. In addition, it is the first time since the conference started selecting a first and second team (2006) that Temple has had two members of the first team in the same season.
Pasquale, a catcher from Pompton Lakes, N.J., is second on the team in batting (.311). The 2011 Rookie of the Year, Pasquale was even better in Atlantic 10 play, hitting .385. Her 13 total doubles are tops on the team, and that total puts her just one double shy of tying the Temple single-season record. For the second year in a row, her strikeout total is in single digits (6) and she is the 32nd toughest player to strikeout in the nation.
Prezioso has had an impressive sophomore campaign, leading the team with a .367 average, which is the third-best average among all Atlantic 10 players. The Bloomfield, N.J. native hit a sizzling .426 in conference-only play. In addition to her team-leading batting average, Prezioso is also tops on the squad in hits (54), slugging percentage (.551), triples (3) and RBI (39). Her hit total is tied for sixth on TU's single-season list, while the RBI total is tied for the second-best all-time in a campaign.
Joining the duo on the first team were Plourde, Fordham's Jamie Labovick, Elise Fortier, Lindsey Bright, Paige Ortiz and Jen Mineau; Bernadette Moran of Saint Joseph's; Charlotte's Briana Gwaltney; and Cyndil Matthew of UMass.
The third-seeded Owls will face sixth-seeded Saint Joseph's at 4:30 p.m. (ET) today in the opening round of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship, being held at the Billiken Sports Center on the Saint Louis University campus.
The All-Conference second-team consists of Dayton's Brandy Brown; George Washington's Lauren Wilson and Kara Clauss; Diaz-Patterson, Katie Bettencourt and Lindsey Webster of UMass; Rhode Island's Kelly Coker; and Lauren Rendon, Dana Parks and Erin Gallagher of Saint Joseph's.
Joining Diaz-Patterson on the All-Rookie team is Charlotte's Lexi Betancourt and Alex Rogers; Kayla English and Natalie Mariano of Dayton; Fordham's Ortiz and Brianna Turgeon; Victoria Valos of George Washington; Alicia Aughton of La Salle; and Rendon and Nicole Palase of Saint Joseph's.
In addition to Marley and Schoell, the softball Academic All-Conference team consists of Brandy Brown and Kathleen Maloof of Dayton; Fordham's Mineau; GW's Wilson; Bettencourt, Kyllie Magill and Matthew of Massachusetts; Rhode Island's Coker; and Parks from Saint Joseph's.
Marley is a 3.85 kinesiology major who is pursuing her second bachelor's degree. The infielder received a BS from Penn State University in 2010, and will complete her second degree from Temple upon graduation later this month. On the field, the Leonardo, N.J. native sports the fourth-highest batting average on the team, hitting .284, nearly 100 points higher than her average a year ago. Her nine doubles are the second-most by any player and her 20 runs batted in are fourth best. She is a member of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor's Society, the University's Dean's List and the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Schoell, who boasts a 3.97 in mechanical engineering, has played in and started 45 games for Temple this season. The outfielder has proven her versatility this year, spending some time at third base to fill in for injured players. Batting from the second spot all year, Schoell leads the team and the Atlantic 10, and ranks third nationally with her per game average, with 20 sacrifice hits. That total is good for fourth on the Temple single-season list and gives her 42 sacrifices in her career, the seventh most all-time at TU. The Lansdale, Pa., native continues to get it done in the classroom, sporting the top grade point average among TU student-athletes and earning her third-straight appearance on Temple's “Trustee Ten” list, given to the top-10 student-athletes at Temple based on GPA. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the University's Dean's List and the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
