St. Louis, Mo. – The third-seeded Temple softball team dropped a disappointing 6-0 decision to sixth-seeded Saint Joseph's this afternoon in its first game of the Atlantic 10 Championship, being held at Billiken Sports Center in Saint Louis, Mo. The Owls now have to immediately face fifth-seeded Charlotte, 9-2 losers earlier in the day to fourth-seeded George Washington, in a win or go home game.
Things certainly did not start the way the Owls (27-21) wanted them to with Saint Joseph's (21-27-1) jumping out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. The Hawks came up empty on a two-out rally in the first, but would not be denied in the second, scoring on a Temple error, a passed ball and a base hit after the first two batters went down. Brooklin White issued two walks in the frame.
SJU struck again in the top of the fourth, building a 4-0 lead. Alaina Loguidice drew a walk to open the inning and eventually scored on Bernadette Moran's single to left field.
The Hawks made it 6-0 with one more in the fifth, and one in the top of the seventh. Another leadoff walk in the fifth gave Saint Joseph's the baserunner, and two outs later, Loguidice doubled to center field to drive in Maria Ficca. Rochelle Christman tacked on another with a leadoff homerun in the top of the final inning.
Erin Gallagher (11-14) was sharp in the circle, scattering three Temple hits, striking out two and walking two in the complete game shutout. Brooklin White (14-11) struggled from the start, allowing eight hits, walking six and striking out three.
The game between Temple and Charlotte will begin at 6 p.m. Central Time.
