Samantha Schoell Named To Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Softball Team

Senior earns a spot on the team for the second time
Full Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Softball Team Release
PHILADELPHIA – For the second time in her career, Temple softball player Samantha Schoell is one of 10 student-athletes who have been selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Softball Team. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Schoell made the team as a sophomore in 2010.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area, an athlete must be in his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
Rowan's Nicolina Veneziano was tabbed the 2012 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Softball Performer of the Year for the second-straight year.
Schoell, a 3.97 mechanical engineering major, played in and started 47 games for Temple this season. The natural outfielder proved her versatility, spending some time at third base to fill in for injured players. Batting from the second spot all year, Schoell led the team and the Atlantic 10, and ranked third nationally, with 20 sacrifice hits. That total is good for fourth on the Temple single-season list and gave her 42 sacrifices in her career, the seventh most all-time at TU.
The Lansdale, Pa., native also got it done in the classroom, sporting the top grade point average among TU student-athletes for the second-straight year and earning her third-straight appearance on Temple's “Trustee Ten” list, given to the top-10 student-athletes at Temple based on GPA. The two-time team captain was twice named to the Capital One Academic All-District II First Team during her career in 2011 and 2012. She is also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and was named to the University's Dean's List and the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll every semester of her career.
