HARRISONBURG, Va. – Just as it did in its season-opener on Sunday, Temple Women's Soccer struck first in Friday's match with Hofstra, scoring 21 minutes into the game, but the Pride, who entered the game receiving votes in the national polls, tacked on the equalizer in the 36th minute and then went on a two-goal scoring spree in a three-minute span midway through the second half to hand the Owls a 3-1 defeat at James Madison's University Park on the opening day of the Fairfield Inn By Marriott Invitational.
“We have to tip our hats to Hofstra today,” head coach Matt Gwilliam said. “They're a talented team that played a good game against us. I felt we matched up well and it was a very balanced game. I'm proud of our team's effort and they showed that we can compete with teams that are among the best in the nation.”
Senior Jourdan Brill netted the first goal of her career to put the Owls (0-1-1) ahead first before Chloe Dale made the connection with Sam Scolarici for Hofstra's (2-0-0) first goal. In the 64th minute, Ruby Staplehurst hooked up with Lulu Echeverry to put the Pride on top shortly before Leah Galton provided an assist on Jill Muholland's goal in the 67th minute.
The Owls posed pressure on the Pride in the early going of the contest. Approaching the 13-minute mark, senior Casey Greco had Temple's first chance of the game, as she blasted a shot that was robbed by Hofstra keeper Emily Morphitis. Seconds later, junior captain Karly O'Toole fed the ball to co-captain senior Kate Yurkovic on a corner kick, before drilling a header just right of the net.
After a Hofstra corner, the Owls battled their way back into Pride territory minutes later, where freshman Paula Jurewicz threw the ball in to begin the setup for Brill's goal.
With the score deadlocked at one at the break, freshman Shannon Senour charged down field and blasted a shot over the goal for the Owls' first chance at recouping the lead. Senour led the Owls with three shots in the contest, including another solid chance in the 56th minute when she pelted a shot right the net, but was rejected by Morphitis to keep the score locked at one. From there, the Pride would work their way to pouring on the two goals it used to win the contest.
For the game, the Owls landed four of their nine shots on goal, while the Pride nailed eight of its 16 shots in the way of redshirt senior Tara Murphy, who nabbed five saves in the match.
Temple will pick up play in the Fairfield Inn By Marriott Invitational Sunday at 1:30 p.m. when it battles tournament host James Madison.
