Women's Soccer Earns First Victory of 2012 In Home-Opener Against NJIT, 1-0

Owls have now shut out opponents in four-straight home matches

AMBLER, Pa. – For the second straight year, Temple Women's Soccer won its home-opener at the Ambler Sports Complex, as it defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders, 1-0, on senior Kate Yurkovic's second goal of the season to help the Owls to their first victory of 2012.
Opening the game with intense execution, the Owls were rewarded in the 21st minute when Yurkovic headed in a shot that was laced to her from senior Casey Greco after a corner kick fed by junior Karly O'Toole.
Temple's effort in the offensive zone led to it outshooting NJIT (1-4-0), 12-4, for the game, having six chances in each half. Of the 12, six tested NJIT 'keeper Samantha Bersett, including Yurkovic's blast off her head that found the back of the net.
Having five shutouts in 2011, redshirt senior Tara Murphy notched her first one of 2012 on Friday, as she needed to make just two saves all game compliments of a stable effort put up in front of her by the Owls' defensive unit.
The shutout by the Owls is the fourth straight clean sheet the team has posted in home games, dating back to last season. In those games, Temple is 3-0-1 since its 1-0 win over George Washington on Oct. 9, 2011.
With the Owls clinging to a 1-0 lead deep into the match, intensity from both sides was evident. In the final seven minutes of the game, three yellow cards were issued, as NJIT was penalized in the 82nd and 87th minutes before TU was warranted one in the final fifty seconds.
Now 1-2-1 on the year, Temple will remain local for the remainder of the weekend, as it heads to Rhodes Field for a match against city-rival Penn on Sunday at 8:00 p.m.
