AMBLER- Temple Men's Soccer opened its home slate with a 3-2 win over the Manhattan Jaspers at the Ambler Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon. Redshirt sophomore Chas Wilson got the Owls out to a commanding lead, having a pair of goals between the 22nd and 33rd minute. Freshman Dalton Andrusko slammed home another goal eight minutes later on a corner kick feed from freshman Jared Martinelli, who had the first two points of his collegiate career with his two assists.
A four-goal explosion in the first half was capped by Manhattan seconds after Andrusko tallied his first goal of his career when Alex Shackley put the Jaspers on the board for the first time and to shift momentum.
Following an energy-filled first half, where 21 shots were launched between the two teams, the second half seemed to take on a different style of play.
The Jaspers outshot Temple, 23-16 for the match, but only six of Manhattan's shot were on target, while exactly half of the Owls attempts were thrown on net, testing Jasper keepers George Ellis and Christopher Lands.
Making adjustments to the pressure each team was facing in the second half, both Manhattan and Temple switched goalkeepers. Sophomore Dan Scheck, who was amking his thrid start of the season was lifted in the 53rd minute when senior Bobby Rosato made his season debut, despite playing with a fractured forearm.
Tensions began to flare and each team made its physicality be known in the latter stages in the match.
Setting the tone for the rest of the game, Manhattan's Eugene Heerschap was warranted a penalty kick in the 63rd minute, which Rosato played perfectly, keeping the Owls in control by two goals.
While both teams remained aggressive, Temple and Manhattan were careded in the 75th and 81st minute, respectively.
With seven minutes to go in the match, the Jaspers made one last push to get back in the game when Naru Park's shot ricocheted off the post and into the net to cut TU's lead to one goal.
Closing out the final six minutes, the Owls avoided any chance of playing into extra time by playing conservative soccer in the final six minutes, keeping the ball out of their own zone for the majority of the remaining time.
With the win, the Owls improve to 1-1-1 on the year and will focus on their road trip to Cal-Poly and Cal. State Northridge this weekend. Temple, who is making its farthest trip since 2006 will open its weekend challenge with Cal-Poly Friday at 10:00 p.m. ET. Taking the loss, Manhattan drops to 0-5-0.
