TEMPLE-PENN STATE — THE SERIES
Saturday's game is the 42nd meeting between the Owls and the Nittany Lions, the longest active series in Temple school history (second longest overall). TU had met only one other opponent more often— Bucknell (44).

Since the teams' first meeting in 1931, the Nittany Lions lead the series, 37-3-1. PSU has won 36 consecutive games since 1943.

Temple has not beaten Penn State since a 14-0 victory on Oct. 18, 1941. The teams tied 7-7 in 1950. The Owls lost by one point in both 1975 and 1976. On. Sept. 6, 1986, the Temple-Penn State game was the first-ever night game played at Beaver Stadium. The Owls and Nittany Lions have also played twice at historic Franklin Field (1975, 1994) and met in Giants Stadium in 1996.

In 2010 at Beaver Stadium, for the first time in three decades Temple held its own with Penn State, leading the #23/20 Nittany Lions for 37 minutes before falling 22-13 in front of 104,840 fans. Senior PK Collin Wagner made a career-high and school-record-tying five field goals, and senior RB Evan Royster rushed for a career-high 187 yards to propel PSU's come-from behind win. RB Bernard Pierce led the Owls with two touchdowns. It marked the first time Temple led at any point in a game against its in-state rival during the Nittany Lions' Big Ten Era (since 1993).

Last fall at Lincoln Financial Field, Temple jumped on the scoreboard first with a two-yard touchdown run by All-American Bernard Pierce.  PSU tied the game in the second quarter, but the Owls took a 10-7 lead into the locker room at halftime with a Brandon McManus 40-yard field goal.  TU held onto its lead throughout the second half until Penn State took its first lead on a Michael Zordich one-yard run with 2:42 remaining. Then the Lions halted Temple's final drive at the PSU 40 to post a 14-10 win over the Owls in front 57,323 fans, the third largest crowd to watch a Temple home game.

It was the closest game in the series since then #11 Penn State toppled Temple, 27-25, in 1985.

HOOT TOOTS ... OWL NOTES & QUOTES
•    After playing the last five seasons in the Mid-American Conference, Temple joins the BIG EAST Conference in 2012.  The Owls previously played in the BIG EAST [1991-2004] for football only. All other sports, including Temple's men's and women's basketball programs, will leave the Atlantic 10 Conference and begin play in the BIG EAST starting in 2013-14.  This will be the first time in Temple's history in which its intercollegiate athletic programs will compete in one conference.

•    In 2011, Temple was bowl eligible for the second time in three seasons and just the sixth time in school history. TU also earned bowl eligibility during the 1934 (1935 Sugar Bowl), 1979 (Garden State Bowl), 1990 (7-4 record, no bowl bid), 2009 (EagleBank Bowl), 2010 (8-4 record, no bowl bid), and 2011 (Gildan New Mexico Bowl) seasons.

•     Five of Temple's 2012 opponents— Penn State (TicketCity), Rutgers (New Era Pinstripe), Pittsburgh (BBVA Compass), Louisville (Belk), and Cincinnati (AutoZone Liberty)— participated in bowls in 2011.

•     “The only positive that I thought came from the game was that I thought our kids battled. They came in at halftime ... banded together, and I thought they had great energy and passion in the second half and that we really had a great opportunity to win the game.”
    — Steve Addazio following the Maryland game, 9/8/12
