Martinelli's Five-Point Day Sparks Men's Soccer To 4-0 Win Over Howard

9.23.12 | Men's Soccer

AMBLER— Freshman Jared Martinelli carried Temple Men's Soccer (3-3-1) back to the .500 mark on Sunday afternoon by torturing Howard (0-10-0) with a five-point day, which included two goals in the Owls 4-0 victory over the Bison on Youth Soccer Appreciation Day at the Ambler Sports Complex.

From the get go, the Owls penetrated Howard's zone and flooded the net with many opportunities. Temple's offensive pressure was intense from the onset and carried its way through the duration of the entire match, helping it improve to 3-0-0 at the Ambler Sports Complex this season,

Before Martinelli tallied for the Owls in the 20th minute, he, along with senior Homero Rodriguez and junior Ryan Bradbury all tested Howard's goalkeeper Eric Hamilton in the opening  minutes but were denied.

Setting up the first goal of the game, senior Cody Calafiore was along the upper middle from about 25 yards out, where he dealt Martinelli the ball to shoot from the top-right side of the box for the early lead.

Not giving Howard any chance to respond, the Owls went right back down into the Bison zone. Getting a corner attempt, Martinelli fed the ball over the middle of the box to junior Nolan Hemmer for the header, which gave the Owls their second goal in less than a four-minute span.

In the second half, TU continued to push and generate chances for itself.

Calafiore and junior Vaughn Spurrier combined to set up junior Jake Lister, who gave the Owls a commanding 3-0 lead in the 66th minute.

With three points on his stat line for the day, Martinelli inked his name once more later in the match when he was chosen to take a penalty kick in the 71st minute, which drilled into the lower-left corner of the net, giving the Owls a 4-0 lead at that point.

Having five points with a pair of goals and an assist, Martinelli now has 11 points on the year, which ranks him second to redshirt sophomore Chas Wilson (12) for the team lead.

From that point, Temple knew its second straight victory was safe, which allowed for freshmen Nevin Joseph and Josh Tagland to make their Cherry & White debuts.

Howard was called for nine of its 16 fouls in the first half, attributing to Temple getting enough possessions to blast 15 shots in the opening 45 minutes. The Owls finished the match outshooting the Bison, 24-7.

Collecting his first shutout of the season and sixth of his career, junior Bobby Rosato made stops on all three shots that came his way.

With the victory, the Owls move to 3-3-1 on the yeat before going into Villanova for their first Philadelphia Soccer Six match on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
