ABOUT TEMPLE…
Returning to the Ambler Sports Complex after dropping a pair of matches on its California road trip, the Owls rebounded this past weekend by gathering a pair of victories at the expense of the Saint Peter's Peacocks and Howard Bison.
Freshman Jared Martinelli is red hot coming into Tuesday's affair with Philadelphia Soccer Six rival Villanova, as he has accumulated 11 points in the last five games. On Monday afternoon, Martinelli repeated as the Rookie of the Week for the Atlantic 10 Conference and for the Philadelphia Soccer Six. In the team's two wins over the weekend, Martinelli had a huge hand in the results, as he sprung for six points, having pairs of goals and assists.
Following Friday's match against Saint Peter's, 13-year head coach David MacWilliams was very satisfied and impressed with the production that has come from Martinelli and transfer/redshirt sophomore Chas Wilson, who is ranked second on the team with eight points. However, he still wanted to see more out of the rest of his players, especially the upperclassmen. On Sunday, senior Cody Calafiore, who has tied or lead the team in scoring the previous two seasons, took note of this as he scored a goal and provided an assist later on.
Allowing just one goal over the weekend, the Temple defensive unit has tightened up, while junior Bobby Rosato has stood strong in goal. Rosato picked up his first shutout of the 2012 season on Sunday by making saves on all three shots that came his way. For the year, the Owls have turned in two clean sheets.
ABOUT VILLANOVA…
Villanova is coming off a 2-1 win over La Salle on Thursday, which was its first Philadelphia Soccer Six match this season.
Returning from injury to ignite the Wildcats to the win was senior Kyle Soroka, as she promptly scored both goals in the team's 2-1 win. Soroka, who leads the team with five goals and an assist, was sidelined for games against Ivy League foes Penn (Sept. 14) and Princeton (Sept. 16) with a sprained knee ligament.
Garnering a record of 6-2-0 before closing out nonp-conference play, the Wildcats reeled off four straight wins to begin the season by defeating Manhattan, Stony Brook, Colgate and Hartford. So far VU is 2-0-0 against Philadelphia-based schools, as it downed Penn and La Salle. The team's only setbacks have come from Air Force and Princeton.
Redshirt senior John Fogarty has done most of the work in between the goal posts this season, as he has allowed eight goals in eight games while making 27 saves and recording one shutout, which came against Colgate.
ALL-TIME SERIES…
Temple is 20-9-3 against Villanova in head-to-head matchups. The Owls and Wildcats will clash for the first time since 2009, when TU came away with a 2-1 win in its season-opener.
