LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Freshman Jared Martinelli continued to show signs of becoming a rising star for Temple Men's Soccer (4-4-1) on Saturdat night at Ben Cohen Stadium, as he scored both goals in the Owls 2-0 victory over Rider (0-8-0), in the team's final non-conference match of the season. Junior Vaugh Spurrier had a hand in both goals, as he dished out assists on Martinelli's scores in the 18th and 60th minute.

In the opening minutes of the match, Martinelli gave Rider's defense a fit, as he four of Temple's first five shots to open the game.

The Owls made the first adjustment to the scoreboard when Spurrier pushed a ball through the middle to Martinelli, who blasted it into the back of the net.
With six assists on the year after his two-helper night, Spurrier, who was a 2010 All-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team selectee, is ranked third on the team in scoring.

In the 60th minute, the Owls added insurance to their one-goal lead when Spurrier and Martinelli hooked up the second time. Spurrier's feed in front of the net was tapped in by reigning A-10 and Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week Martinelli to widen the deficit.

Looking to respond, the Owls' defense was on point and limited the Broncs chances. Having just five goals as team this season, Rider once again had difficulty generating offense, causing it to still be in search of its first win of the season with one non-conference match remaining on its schedule.

Temple won the shots count, 11-4, limiting Rider to just two shots on goal, which came in the 36th and 42nd minute. Junior goalkeeper Bobby Rosato made stops on both chances that came his way and was not tested once in the second half, allowing him to nail down his second shutout in the last three games.

Having a four-point night with the two goals, Martinelli now leads the team with 15 points, as the team heads into Atlantic 10 Conference play next weekend.

As a team, the Owls have now posted four shutouts and close out non-conference play at .500 with a record of 4-4-1 before hosting Saint Bonaventure at the Ambler Sports Complex on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
