Temple did face head coach Randy Edsall during his UConn tenure.  In 2010 at Lincoln Financial Field, the Owls claimed a 30-16 win over the Edsall-coached Connecticut Huskies. It marked the Owls' first win over a BCS school since a 34-24 victory over Syracuse in 2004.

TEMPLE-MARYLAND CONNECTIONS
Temple running backs coach Tyree Foreman was an undergrad at the University of Virginia (1997-01) when Maryland RB coach Andre Powell served as the running backs/special teams coach.

Temple inside linebackers coach Sean McGowan served as the defensive coordinator at Duquesne University in 2002 under head Greg Gattuso, now the Maryland defensive line coach.

Temple's director of operations Ed Foley was the offensive coordinator at Fordham in 1999 with Maryland's outside linebackers coach Lyndon Johnson, who was the Rams' defensive line coach. Ironically, UM's director of operations is named Foley, too— Fran Foley. The Foleys are not related.

Temple has 12 players on its roster from Maryland— freshman WR?Antonio Belt (Forestville, Md.), freshman WR Samuel Benjamin (Baltimore, Md.), senior OL Sean Boyle (Towson, Md.), senior RB Matt Brown (Baltimore, Md.), sophomore DB Brian Burns (Bowie, Md.), redshirt freshman RB Hassan Dixon (Germantown, Md.), freshman WR Nathan Hairston, junior LB Gary Onuekwusi (Baltimore, Md.), freshman FB Drew Stefanelli (Rockville, Md.), freshman RB Avery Williams (Baltimore, Md.), redshirt freshman LB Desmond Williams (Hyattsville, Md.), and freshman DB Tavon Young (Oxon Hill, Md.).   Senior WR C.J. Hammond hails from Washington, D.C.

Maryland has nine players from Pennsylvania but just one from the Philadelphia area. Freshman TE P.J. Gallo (Holland, Pa. / Council Rock South) hails from the Philly suburbs.

TEMPLE-MARYLAND — THE SERIES
Saturday's game is the eighth meeting between the Owls and the Terrapins. Maryland won the first six meetings as Temple claimed its only win in 2011. The teams met for four consecutive seasons from 1997-2000 as UM earned three of its four victories by a touchdown or less.

In 2004, the Terps defeated the Owls, 45-22, in an evening contest at Byrd Stadium.

During the 2005 outing at Lincoln Financial Field, Maryland claimed a 38-7 win.  The Owls' Umar Ferguson scored the game's first touchdown in the first quarter.  The Terrapins responded with 38 unanswered points.

Last fall at Byrd Stadium, Temple stunned Maryland, 38-7, as junior RB Bernard Pierce rushed for a Mid-American Conference and TU school record five touchdowns.  Senior QB Chester Stewart, making his first start of the season, was a perfect 9-9 for 140 yards. It marked the first BCS road win for the Owls since 2002 and first-ever win over an ACC opponent.

HOOT TOOTS ... OWL NOTES & QUOTES
•    After playing the last five seasons in the Mid-American Conference, Temple joins the BIG EAST Conference in 2012.  The Owls previously played in the BIG EAST [1991-2004] for football only. All other sports, including Temple's men's and women's basketball programs, will leave the Atlantic 10 Conference and begin play in the BIG EAST starting in 2013-14.  This will be the first time in Temple's history in which its intercollegiate athletic programs will compete in one conference.

•    In 2011, Temple was bowl eligible for the second time in three seasons and just the sixth time in school history. TU also earned bowl eligibility during the 1934 (1935 Sugar Bowl), 1979 (Garden State Bowl), 1990 (7-4 record, no bowl bid), 2009 (EagleBank Bowl), 2010 (8-4 record, no bowl bid), and 2011 (Gildan New Mexico Bowl) seasons.

•     Five of Temple's 2012 opponents— Penn State (TicketCity), Rutgers (New Era Pinstripe), Pittsburgh (BBVA Compass), Louisville (Belk), and Cincinnati (AutoZone Liberty)— participated in bowls in 2011.

•     "We told our team going into this game that our goal was to play physical and play tough and be relentless to the ball—and those are the things that we wanted to get accomplished. We wanted to play like a team and I thought that happened. We wanted to play physical, a physical brand of football. I thought that we played as a team, we complimented each other. When one side was down the other side picked it up. I thought that was exciting and it was good to see. "
