Singles Play Gets Underway for Women's Tennis at Saint Joseph's Invitational

Breland survives to advance to Sunday in consolation singles
PHILADELPHIA – Singles play got underway on Saturday at the Saint Joseph's Invitational, being held at Saint Joseph's University on Friday-Sunday, September 28-30.
Maame Ama Osei represented Temple at the first flight. The sophomore dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision in the opening round to Danea Jonjic of Delaware. In consolation play, Osei fell 6-4, 6-4, to Pitt's Jocelyn Lu.
At flight 2, Rebecca Breland was a three-set loser in the opening round, falling 3-6, 6-4, 10-6, to Drexel's Erin Bowsher. The sophomore saw success in the consolation round, however, defeating Allison Kuse of Villanova 7-6(6), 6-2, before winning by retirement against Hayley Sanzone, also of Villanova. She will play in the consolation final on Sunday.
Carly Bohman was a first round winner over Lafayette's Ally Simels at flight 3, 6-1, 6-2. Her quest for a title ended in the next round, however, with a defeat to Pitt's Taylor Washington, 6-2, 6-3.
Cristina Grimaldi was scheduled to play at flight 4, but had to withdrawal due to injury.
