Owls Host Maryland on Sept. 8
CLEVELAND – Temple DB Vaughn Carraway (Laureldale, Pa.) has been named an Honorable Mention Jim Thorpe Defensive Player of the Week, the Jim Thorpe Association announced.
In Temple's 41-10 over Villanova on Friday, Carraway made his first appearance in the Owls' starting line-up at free safety. He had the second interception of his career and returned it 57 yards for his first touchdown. He finished with three solos tackles and a fumble recovery, the first of his career.
Carraway was also named to the BIG EAST's five-man Honor Roll.
Alabama's Dee Milliner was the national Defensive Player of the week, while Minnesota S Derrick Wells, UTSA S Triston Wade, and Louisville S Calvin Pryor joined Carraway with Honorable Mention accolades.
Temple (1-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) hosts Maryland (1-0, 0-0 ACC) on Sept. 8 at Noon at Lincoln Financial Field. ESPNU will televise the game nationally in HD.
The Thorpe Award is named after history's greatest athlete, Jim Thorpe, and is presented by the Jim Thorpe Association in Oklahoma City. The candidates for the award are selected by a “screening committee” of Jim Thorpe Association members who follow several players throughout the season, watching games and researching information sources to grade Thorpe Award candidates on the basis of performance on the field, athletic ability and character. The committee then narrows the field to three finalists and the names of these finalists are submitted to a national panel of about 50 sports writers, sportscasters, coaches and former players who vote to determine the winner. The Thorpe Award winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on December 6, 2012 on ESPN.
