No. 12 Men's Gymnastics Starts 2013 With 3rd Place Finish At Navy Open

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –
The No. 12 Temple men's gymnastics team got its 2013 season underway on Saturday with a third place finish at the Navy Open. Earning a team score of 407.05, the Owls fell only to No. 4 Penn State (440.90) and No. 14 William & Mary (409.40), while outdoing host Navy (398.80), Springfield (391.15) and SUNY Brockport (165.75).

In its season opener, Temple had its best finishes in the floor exercise and on horizontal bars.

The Owls combined for a score of 69.10 on the mat, making the Owls the runner-up for the event title. Graduate student and team captain Evan Burke led Temple in the event with his score of 14.65, which placed him third in the overall competition. Joining his captain in the top 10, freshman Blaise Cosenza earned a score of 13.95 to place as Temple's second-highest scorer and eighth overall in his first collegiate meet.

For Burke, it was one of two events where he came out as Temple's top performer. Later in the afternoon, he posted a score of 14.60 on the vault, which sat him in sixth place among all other participants in the event and helped the team take third place.

Defending ECAC floor exercise champion John Leonard opened his senior season with a solid performance in the first meet of the season, claiming a total of 13.65 points for 12th overall and third on the team before taking Temple's second-best score on the vault with a 14.3.

On the horizontal bars, Temple was spurred to another second place finish by senior all-arounder Allan Malone, sophomore Michael Bittner and freshman Jon Rydzefski. Of the 69.35 points they were awarded in the event, Malone, who placed fourth in the meet with an all-around score of 80.500, topped the Owls with his score of 14.1, which was strong enough to place him seventh overall, while Bittner and Rydzefski earned like scores of 14.05 to tie for ninth place in the competition.

Malone carried his teammates on the still rings, earning a score of 13.75 for 12th among all performers. Senior Asaaf Zoor placed second in Temple's lineup with his score of 13.55, ahead of freshman Evan Eigner (13.40) and Rydzefski, who had a 13.30 in the team's fourth place team finish on the apparatus.

Senior Alex Tighe came away with a strong performance as well, scoring 13.95 to haul in a 13th place ranking.

Before helping the Owls to a second place finish on horizontal bars, Tighe led the squad on pommel horse with the 11th-best score in the meet, with a 13.75 on the apparatus, and with a team-best score of 13.80 on parallel bars, which placed him sixth among overall in the event.

Contributing to the team's score of 65.40 on pommel, senior Brendan Williams followed Tighe with a solid performance, scoring 13.70 for 12th overall, while Rydzefski continued an impressive Temple debut with the team's third place score in the event with a 13.25.

"We look forward to building off what we did today next weekend," head coach Fred Turoff said. "We also look forward to improving on the unexpected errors we made today."

From here, Temple (2-2) will look toward its next meet when it goes to Spingfield next Sunday (Jan. 27) for a 1:00 p.m. competition.
