Cook and Robinson lead team for third-straight year
PHILADELPHIA – Temple's head softball coach, Joe DiPietro, has announced the captains for the 2013 season. Seniors Kayla Cook (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) and Ali Robinson (Woodbury, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) will share the leadership role for the upcoming season. Both players have been captains the past two seasons.
Cook enters her third year as captain having played in 97 career games, starting 84 of them. Returning from an injury laden sophomore year, the utility player had her best year offensively with a .235 average at the plate last season. Used mostly as a first baseman or catcher, Cook also filled in at the designated hitter spot on occasion a year ago.
Robinson, a starter in all 139 career games she has played in, is also in her third season in the captain's role. She had her best offensive year to date a season ago, leading the team and finishing second in the conference in runs scored. Her 47 times crossing the plate set a Temple single-season record and with 108 in her career, she enters her final year tied for the school record. She ended the 2012 season 16th in the nation in runs per game.
“Ali and Kayla are very good leaders and our players respect them tremendously,” said DiPietro. “They have both been here for four years now and they know how things work and what is needed for us to be successful. These two were my first two recruits at Temple when I was hired and I feel really blessed to have them as our captains.”
Temple, which made its second-straight appearance in the Atlantic 10 Championship in 2012, will look to improve on its 27-22 (12-6 A-10) record from a season ago. The 2013 Owls get the season underway on February 22 at the Elon Invitational, squaring off against Hampton in a 6:45 p.m. game.
