Smith Joins Temple Football Coaching Staff

PHILADELPHIA – Temple University head football coach Matt Rhule announced Terry Smith as the Owls' wide receivers coach on Monday.
Smith, one of the nations' most high-profile high school coaches, spent the last 11 seasons as the head coach at Monroeville's Gateway High School.
“I am so excited to welcome Terry Smith to Temple University,” Rhule said. “His extensive coaching background, his knowledge of the game, and his success on the high school, college, and professional levels will benefit our players and our staff immediately. Throughout his coaching career, Terry has produced outstanding players. His longstanding ties in Western Pennsylvania will greatly benefit us on the recruiting trail. We are happy that Terry is now a Temple Owl.”
Additionally, former Owls QB Colin Clancy (2005-08), DB Evan Cooper, Jr. (2005-08), and QB Adam DiMichele (2006-08) were added as graduate assistant coaches.
The Owls begin spring practice on March 22 in preparation for their second season of BIG EAST Conference play in 2013. Temple returns 46 letterwinners and 15 starters, including Freshman All-American and BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Tyler Matakevich. The Owls open the 2013 slate at Notre Dame on August 31.

Terry Smith, one of the nations' most high-profile high school coaches, enters his first season at Temple University as the wide receivers coach.
He joins the Owls after 11 seasons as the head coach at Monroeville's Gateway High School.
Under Smith's guidance, the Gators went 101-30 overall with 11 W.P.I.A.L. playoff appearances, seven conference championships, four AAAA title games, and numerous Top 25 national rankings, while turning out more than 70 students on Division I college scholarships.
Under Smith's watch, Gateway matriculated Pittsburgh Steelers' linebacker Mortty Ivy and defensive back Justin King, his son. As a running back, King became one of the first WPIAL running backs to collect 4,000 career yards in AAAA.
In 2010, Smith was named one of the 50 Men of Excellence by The New Pittsburgh Courier for his accomplishment, sacrifice, and service in the community.
Smith, 43, is a 1987 graduate of Gateway High School and a member of the 1985 and 1986 Gators' W.P.I.A.L. AAAA championship football teams. He was elected to the Gateway Sports Hall of Fame.
A 1991 graduate of Penn State, Smith received his degree in business management. He was a four-year letterwinner at wide receiver with the Nittany Lions under Joe Paterno. Smith finished his collegiate career with 108 receptions for 1,825 yards and 15 touchdowns which ranks sixth on the Lions' career chart for receptions and seventh for receiving yards.
Smith was an 11th-round draft pick by the Washington Redskins in 1992.
Smith is married to the former Alison Fulton. They have two children—son Justin King (25), a defensive back for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and daughter Haley (14).
