Women's Tennis Sends Four to USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional

PHILADELPHIA – Temple will send four women's tennis players to the 2013 USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championship this weekend, hosted by the University of Virginia at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Owls send seniors Jordan Batey, Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina, and freshman Anais Nussaume to the competition, which will take place Oct 18-22.

A total of 88 singles players and 48 doubles pairs from 25 teams are facing off as individuals in singles and doubles. This is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place in October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions will advance to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 7-10, at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y.

The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete at one of the 87 USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country.

Batey, Doms and Mavrina are all playing in the event for the fourth straight year. This will be Nussaume's first appearance in the tournament.

Doms and Batey have both earned a spot in the singles main draw. Doms will take on Caryssa Peretz of Virginia in her first round match on Saturday afternoon. Batey faces Delaware's Dorothy Safron in the opening round of 64.

Mavrina begins play in the singles qualifying draw on Friday morning. She will take on Nika Khmolovska of Old Dominion, vying for a shot into the main draw.

In the doubles main draw, Mavrina and Nussaume team up to face West Virginia's Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole in first round play on Friday afternoon. Batey and Doms pair up and take on Kimmy Broza and Audrey Ann Blakely of Pittsburgh in the opening round.
