Matakevich Earns Midseason All-Conference Honors; Two More Owls Recognized

Phil Steele released his annual Mid-Season Awards this week with three Temple players receiving honors.
Tyler Matakevich was awarded 1st Team All-American Athletic Conference Linebacker. Matakevich midway through the season leads the Owls in tackles with 82, including 58 solo stops and 7 TFL. The Owls sophomore team captain had his best game of the season against Idaho in September where he racked up 24 tackles, a new school record. Matakevich leads the nation in solo tackles (10.8) per contest and is 2nd in total stops (13.7)
Also receiving honors for Temple was senior punter Paul Layton. Layton received 2nd Team All-American Athletic Conference Punter. On the season, Layton is averaging 45.1 yards a punt with 12 punts over 50 yards as well as 12 punts landing inside the 20-yard line. Layton has a long this season of 67 yards and ranks 9th in NCAA and 2nd in the American Athletic Conference in net punting.
Rounding out the Temple players receiving the midseason nod from Phil Steele is Jahad Thomas. Thomas receives his honor as 2nd Team All-American Athletic Conference Kick Returner. Thomas has totaled 243 kickoff return yards, including a long of 43 yards. On the season he is averaging 23.1 yards per return.
