Men's Soccer Beats Memphis 2-1 for First Ever American Athletic Conference Win

10.19.13 | Men's Soccer

AMBLER, Pa. - Temple Men's Soccer defeated Memphis 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex.  The win against the Tigers gives Temple (8-3-3, 1-1-3) its first ever win in the American Athletic Conference and six total points.

The first half was scoreless.  Both teams got a feel for each other and played each other tight, with this game being the first ever match between the two schools.  Temple and Memphis each finished with six shots in the first half.

The play opened up in the second half.  Both teams got chances in the first 15 minutes of the half with goalies Dan Scheck and Cody Uzcategui making big saves for their teams.

As the second half went on, the physicality increased.  It resulted in a penalty kick for Temple in the 80th minute as Ryan Bradbury was fouled in the box.  Robert Sagel took the kick, and scored by tapping the ball to the left side of the net as Uzcategui dove to the right.  It was Sagel's third goal of the season.

The Tigers quickly responded, getting their own penalty kick six minutes later.  Mark Sherrod scored his fifth goal of the year, shooting it past a diving Scheck.

Two minutes later, the Owls scored the game-winner.  Jake Lister took the ball down the right corner, and crossed it over to the middle inside the box where Jared Martinelli scored from 10 feet away.  It was Martinelli's sixth goal and fourth game-winning goal of the season.

Scheck made seven saves for the Owls to get the victory.

Temple finished with 13 shots while Memphis had 14.

The loss snapped a three game conference streak where the Owls had tied their opponents 1-1.

Up next for the Owls is a road game against Rutgers next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.  The Scarlet Knights are 5-8-1, 2-3-0 this season and have a three game-losing streak.
