PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Temple men's soccer defeated Rutgers 1-0 to earn their first ever American Athletic Conference road win at Yurcak Stadium. The win improves the Owls record to 9-3-3, 2-1-3.
Both teams limited offensive chances with good defense in the early part of the first half. In the 25th minute, Vaughn Spurrier had a breakaway, but his shot went just wide. In the 37th minute, Spurrier redeemed himself when he passed the ball from the Rutgers' end line to the front of the net to Chas Wilson, where Wilson buried it past the Scarlet Knights' goalkeeper. It was Wilson's third goal of the season.
Dan Scheck had another stellar start for the Owls, making big saves in the second half to earn his eighth shutout of the season. With 24 minutes remaining in regulation, he made a diving save to preserve the lead. Six minutes later, he made another great save. He came up big again with under three minutes to make his final save of the game as the Owls didn't allow another shot on goal. Scheck had a total of five saves in the game.
The Owls are undefeated in their last six games while claiming victories over Drexel, Memphis and Rutgers.
Up next for the Owls is another road game against UCF this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Knights are 6-4-4, 3-1-2, and are undefeated in their last six games, including a 1-0 win at USF tonight.
