PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Following the final weekend of regular season play, the inaugural American Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship seedings were set, with UCF earning the conference's first regular season title and securing the No.1 seed.
UCF (15-2-2, 8-0-1 American) earned the first American regular-season title following a 2-0 weekend, jumping from second place in the standings to first overall. The Knights, currently the only conference team ranked in both the NSCAA and Soccer America polls, led the league in team scoring with 47 goals, 138 points and 44 assists. Senior goalkeeper Lianne Maldonado boasts the lowest goals against average (0.62) in The American heading into the Championship. With the No. 1 seed, UCF secures a first-round bye as well as home field advantage throughout the tournament due to the UCF Soccer Complex serving as the Championship site. The Knights will face the winner of Temple/SMU on Sunday, Nov. 3 in the quarterfinals.
Louisville (12-4-1, 8-1-0 American) claimed the No. 2 seed, finishing second in the regular-season standings. The Cards will host the opening round matchup of Memphis versus Houston on Nov. 1, and face the winner two days later in the quarterfinals. Louisville secured their spot following a 5-4 overtime thriller over Cincinnati on Friday. Heading into the Championship, senior midfielder Charlyn Corral is The American's individual points leader, tied for first in the league with 13 goals and standing alone at the top with 36 points, averaging 2.12 per game.
Rutgers (12-4-2, 5-3-1 American) is the No. 3 seed, placing third in the regular season after being picked in the same spot in the Preseason Coaches' Poll to open the 2013 season. As a team, the Scarlet Knights feature the best home record for any conference team this year, defending Yurcak Field with a 10-1-0 record, and will look to better that record when they host Cincinnati in the quarterfinals next Sunday.
UConn (11-8-0, 5-4-0 American) secured the final home-field host seed for the quarterfinals with its fourth-place finish, and will welcome No. 5 seed USF to Joseph J. Morrone Stadium on Sunday. The Huskies' Rachel Hill has performed consistently as one of The American's top freshmen this season, sitting tied for second in points scored with 29 (the most for a freshman) and third in goals scored with 12.
No. 5 seed USF (9-4-5, 4-3-2 American) made a strong stand in the last two weekends of the regular season, going unbeaten over the course of four games to claim a first-round bye and land in the quarterfinals. The Bulls put together a strong offensive regular season, ranking in the top five as a team in all of the conference's offensive standings.
Cincinnati (8-10-1, 4-4-1 American) exceeded expectations in conference play, earning the No. 6 seed for the Championship after originally being picked to finish ninth in the Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Bearcats handed UCF the only blemish on its conference record, forcing the Knights to a draw on Oct. 11. In playing only 15 games during the regular season, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Natalie Smith recorded 73 saves, good for third overall in the conference.
The first opening round matchup will be played between No. 7 seed Memphis (11-7-0, 4-5-0 American) and No. 10 seed Houston (1-11-3, 0-9-0 American) on Friday, Nov. 1 at the UCF Soccer Complex in Orlando, Fla. Tiger freshman Valerie Sanderson is tied for top in the league with 13 goals on the season, while Cougar keeper Cami Koski has been one of The American's top performers between the pipes this year, totaling 90 saves and maintaining the highest save percentage at .818.
No. 8 seed SMU (8-8-1, 3-5-1 American) and No. 9 seed Temple will square off in the second opening-round game at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Ky. on Friday, with the winner facing No. 2 seed Louisville on Sunday. Despite their record, the Mustangs were able to challenge some of the conference's top teams this season, drawing with USF this past weekend and defeating Cincinnati. Temple sophomore Shauni Kerkhoff has also been a presence in The American's solid field of keepers, as she leads the league with 92 saves and seven shutouts.
The 2013 American Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship will culminate in Orlando, Fla. as host UCF will serve as the site for the semifinals and title game of the tournament. The semifinals will be held on Friday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and both games will be streamed on TheAmerican.org. The title game is set for Nov. 10 at Noon and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
