10.5.13 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Temple defeated rival Drexel in a Philadelphia Soccer Six match, 2-0, on Saturday evening at Vidas Field. The win improves Temple's Philadelphia Soccer Six record to 2-1 with a win over Villanova already this season.
"I thought this was a great game for our team," Temple head coach David MacWilliams said. "We beat a good team in Drexel. We were able to create chances and finish. This was one of our best games of the season."
The Owls scored its first goal in the match in the 21st minute. Willie Chalfant sent Jared Martinelli wide with a pass, and Drexel's goalie made a save off of Martinelli's shot. The Dragons couldn't control the rebound, and Chalfant gathered the ball and scored from 10 yards out with a shot from straight on. It was Chalfant's first career goal and it came on his 21st birthday.
"It was a great goal," MacWilliams said. "Willie (Chalfant) showed great composure. He buried his shot past the goalie."
Vaughn Spurrier added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute. He dribbled to the left side of the field, beat two defenders and shot it past the goalie to the far post. It was his second goal of the season.
"He dribbled through two defenders and made some nice moves," MacWilliams said. "He was the best player on the field today. It was definitely his best game of the season. The coaching staff was very pleased with his performance today."
Dan Scheck earned the win for the Owls with four saves in the game for his seventh shutout of the season.
Temple had 18 shots in the game, while Drexel only had one less with 17.
The game marked the end of non-conference play for the Owls. They finished their non-conference portion of their schedule with a 7-2 record.
Up next for the Owls is a road game against SMU next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The Mustangs are 2-7-0 this season, but are two points ahead of the Owls in the conference with a 1-0 victory at Rutgers on Sept. 20th.
