Men's Soccer Ties SMU 1-1

10.9.13 | Men's Soccer

Coach MacWilliams Interview | Player Interview

DALLAS, TEXAS –
Temple men's soccer tied SMU 1-1 at Westcott Field on Wednesday Night in American Athletic Conference action.  The tie gives Temple (7-3-2, 0-1-2) another point in the conference standings, as they tied No. 24 UConn last Wednesday at home.

It took only two minutes for SMU to get on the scoreboard.  Eddie Puskarich took advantage of a turnover in the middle of a field, and blasted a shot 20 yards away in the top left corner of the net.

The rest of the half was even, as both teams had a few opportunities.  SMU led the shots category 7-6 at halftime.

The Owls didn't prevail however.  They took control at the very beginning of the second half, keeping the ball in the Mustangs side for the majority of the second half.  They had several opportunities, including a shot by Jared Martinelli that hit the cross bar.  They were finally rewarded for the hard work in the 68th minute.  After a shot from Robert Sagel hit the cross bar, Nolan Hemmer collected the rebound and shot it past the goalie just inside the box.  It was Hemmer's first goal of the season.

After the goal, both teams traded chances.  Neither team could convert.  The game went into two overtimes with neither team taking advantage of opportunities in extra play.

Goalkeeper Dan Scheck made five saves in the game.

The Owls continue conference play with a home game against USF on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.  The Owls will look to get their first ever American Athletic Conference victory after tying conference opponents in their past two games.  The Owls are unbeaten at home, and will look to get a victory over a Bulls team that's 4-2-4, 1-1-1 and coming off a 4-1 home victory over Cincinnati.
