Robert Sagel Named as a Candidate for National Team

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Temple men's soccer Robert Sagel was named as one of five freshmen with the possibility of making the 2015 Under 20 U.S.A Men's National Team by Top Drawer Soccer. The freshman defenseman from Las Vegas has had a stellar start to his freshman season and is gaining recognition for it.

"Sagel has been in the youth national team picture before so he is not entirely an unknown quantity, but it has been awhile since the last time he made his name with the Federation. The center back has enjoyed a strong debut campaign with two goals and sits in third place on the team in minutes (played). He is a technical defender who likes to join in the attack, which should work well for (U-20 head coach Tab) Ramos and his staff."
Sagel has certainly gotten off to a great start to his collegiate career at Temple. His two goals tie him for second on the team for goals and fourth most for total points. His 1,013 minutes played are only eight minutes below the current leaders of Stefan Mueller, a fellow freshman defender, and goalkeeper Dan Scheck. His two goals have both come off set pieces for the Owls. The first came off a header from a corner kick by Jared Martinelli against Hofstra on September 8th, and the other goal came last Wednesday to even the game in a 1-1 tie against No. 24 UConn.
His goal against UConn and tough defense in a 2-0 win at Drexel last Saturday earned him Rookie of the Week by the American Athletic Conference. It was the second time he was honored by the conference, as he was on the weekly honor roll on Sept. 9th.
