Men's Soccer Defeats Cincinnati 1-0 in Double Overtime on Senior Day
11.2.13 | Men's Soccer
AMBLER, Pa. – Temple men's soccer sent its seniors out in winning fashion on Senior Day, defeating Cincinnati (6-11-1, 1-7-0) 1-0 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex. Winning the last game of the regular season, the Owls' record for the regular season is 10-3-4, 3-1-4.
Before the game, all seven seniors for Temple were honored for their time donning the cherry and white. Jake Lister, Vaughn Spurrier, Ryan Bradbury, Sam Speaker, Nolan Hemmer, Sawyer Hemmer, and Sam Heller all started for the Owls in their final home regular season match in Ambler.
In the first 10 minutes of the game, the ball remained mostly near midfield. The Owls then controlled the ball for the rest of the half, but couldn't convert any scoring chances. The Owls outshoot the Bearcats 9-1 in the half.
The second half featured both teams getting chances, but both goalies came up big with diving saves. Cincinnati had 8 shots to Temple's five.
The first overtime period featured the same back-to-back play, with each team getting two shots and one on goal.
Less than 30 seconds into the second overtime, Bradbury had control of the ball in the middle of the field. He passed it over to Spurrier on the outside where he made a move to get by a defender and kicked it over the goalie that came out to challenge him in the left corner of the net. It was Spurrier's fourth goal of the season. It was only fitting that it was the two seniors who combined to win the game for the Owls on Senior Day.
Goalkeeper Dan Scheck once again had a solid day in net for the Owls. He had four saves for his ninth shutout of the season.
Win the win, the Owls will host a match in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against an opponent to be determined. Matchups will be announced tomorrow after the regular season concludes for all of the conference schools.
