MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Temple women's basketball opened American Athletic Conference play with a 63-56 win at Memphis on Sunday afternoon at Roane Fieldhouse.
The Owls improved to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Tigers fell to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in the league. The victory was Temple's four consecutive win in a conference opener.
In the first half, Temple jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Owls built their lead to seven, 18-11, before Memphis came back. The Tigers used a 9-0 run to take its only lead, 20-18. Temple then went on a run of its own, thanks to four consecutive three-point buckets, including back-to-back treys by junior Tyonna Williams (Fort Washington, Md.). TU held a nine-point advantage, 36-27, at intermission.
In the second half, Temple scored the first basket to go up by 11 points. The Tigers came back within five, 44-39 with 13:47 to go. TU went on a 7-0 run to go ahead by 10 points, 51-41. But Memphis held on. The Tigers cut the Owls' lead to one point, 55-54, with 1:33 remaining. Four made free throw shots by Williams down the stretch sealed the TU win.
"They started scoring on us and getting offensive rebounds," said sixth-year head coach Tonya Cardoza. "They're at home, and they will continue to fight. When they cut it to one, we definitely took over the game."
Four Temple starters netted double figures, led by sophomore Erica Covile's (Detroit, Mich.) 14 points. Williams followed with 13 points, while freshman Feyonda Fitzgerald's (Norfolk, Va.) added 11 points. Senior Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury, N.C.) had her second double-double of the season (third of career) with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and senior Natasha Thames (Port Huron, Mich.) had nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
"That's what we feel makes us a good team," Cardoza said of the balanced scoring. "It's hard to key in on one person."
Ariel Hearn led Memphis with 22 points. Taylor Williams added 12 points off the bench.
Overall, Temple out-rebounded Memphis, 43-34. The Owls shot 42 percent from the field (23-of-55), while the Tigers shot 35 percent (21-of-60).
Temple opens the new year with its American Athletic Conference home opener against No. 7 Louisville on Jan. 1 at 4 p.m. at McGonigle Hall.
