NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 announced Friday that Massachusetts women's lacrosse was picked to finish first in the 2013 season. Temple was picked fourth of eight teams in the annual poll, conducted by the league's eight head coaches.

The Minutewomen, who won their fourth straight Atlantic 10 title last April, garnered five first-place votes for a point total of 61. UMass defeated Richmond in the Atlantic 10 Championship and then defeated Canisius in the NCAA play-in game to advance to the NCAA First Round. Massachusetts finished the season with a narrow 15-12 loss to Maryland in the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 19-2. The Minutewomen were a perfect 7-0 in A-10 play and won their fifth league title overall.

Richmond, the 2012 championship runner-up, was picked to finish second this season with 57 points. The Spiders, who finished 5-2 and tied for second last year, picked up three first place votes in the 2013 polling. Overall, Richmond was 10-8 in 2013.

Duquesne, which tied Richmond at 5-2 in conference play last year and finished 12-5 overall was picked to finish third with 46 points. Temple was chosen fourth with 36 points after finishing 10-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play 2012.
