#12 Men's Gymnastics Outdone By #9 California, 428.650-405.150

3.10.13 | Men's Gymnastics

BERKELEY, Calif.— The start to a busy week got underway for the No. 12 Temple men's gymnastics team, as they competed in their first of three road meets in seven days on Sunday at No. 9 California Berkely, where the Owls were outdone 428.650-405.150. Graduate student Taylor Brana was the standout for Temple, as he led the Owls on pommel horse (14.2) and still rings (14.3), while tying senior Alex Tighe for the event title on parallel bars (14.6).

Senior Allan Malone had a solid showing in his worked events, as he placed as Temple's top finisher in all three that he competed in.

Starting the day in the floor exercise, Malone came away with TU's top score in the event with his score of 14.9 before moving on to pommel, where he again claimed his team's best mark with his earned score of  14.2. The Cookeville, Tenn. native completed his day on the horizontal bar where his performance was strong enough for a 13.750, which was the top score for a Temple gymnast in the event.

The only California native on Temple's roster, junior Brendan Williams, took part in three events, with his pommel horse demonstration being his best, as he was tabbed with a 13.500. His score on the apparatus was only behind Brana for the team lead. Williams, who hails from Thousand Oaks, came away with a 13.4 on parallel bars and a 13.25 score for his floor exercise routine.

Floor exercise proved to be Temple's strong event for the day, where it racked up a team score of 71.1 behind Malone's 14.9.

California was crowned with event titles in all six events, compliments of Kevin Wolting, who was the only gymnast competing as an all-arounder. Wolting totaled a score of 87.7, which included individual event titles on vault (15.1) and on the horizontal bar (14.850).

Graduate student Evan Burke led the Owls' vault lineup to a 67.3 total score with his solid routine, which was worth a 14.250.

No. 12 Temple (10-4) will make its way to Colorado for Thursday's meet at Air Force. Competition is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
