PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's tennis team extended its win streak to three matches with a hard fought 4-3 victory over visiting California U of Pennsylvania this morning. The match took place at Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center.
The Vulcans, ranked ninth in the ITA in Division II, took an early lead by winning the doubles point. Temple started play with a win at No. 3 when Jordan Batey and Alicia Doms teamed up to win 8-2, but the visitors won the final two bouts for the 1-0 lead.
Minami Okajima made it 1-1 with her straight-set win at six singles, not dropping a game in the 6-0, 6-0 victory. Cal U came right back with Alexandra Borgenhoff's win at No. 3, before Rebecca Breland tied it up again with a 6-1, 7-5 decision at the fourth flight.
Maxime Colen gave the Vulcans the lead once more with a three set victory over Carly Bohman at the fifth flight, 7-5, 0-6, 6-4. But the Owls had the final say as Doms and Yana Mavrina, at the first and second flights respectively, picked up tough wins. Doms defeated Lucie Sipkova 7-6(4), 7-5 to make it a 3-3 match, and Mavrina hung on for a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 decision over Ramona Czakon at No. 2 to give TU the win.
“The girls stepped up today,” commented head coach Steve Mauro. “Cal is a solid team and this is a very good win. We're hoping to keep this momentum going headed into the upcoming Atlantic 10 matches we have.”
Temple returns to the court on Wednesday, March 13, when it travels to Duquesne for a 5 p.m. match against the A-10 foe.
