Lacrosse Falls 15-11 at Delaware Despite a Big Game from Stephany Parcell

NEWARK, Del. - After closing one gap, the second proved too big to overcome for Temple lacrosse in a 15-11 loss at Delaware on Wednesday evening. The Blue Hens (6-3) scored 10 goals in the second half, and a late 3-0 run for the Owls (5-4) was not enough. Stephany Parcell scored four goals and recorded three assists for seven total points to lead Temple in the game.

Jaymie Tabor scored two goals for Temple, as did Megan Pinkerton who also tallied an assist. Delaware's Caitlin McCartney scored a career-high six goals to lead her team, while Chelsea Fay also notched a hat trick with three goals.

Delaware struck first after just one minute of play, but Parcell drove in from the top of the circle soon after and found a hole in Delaware's defense to score her first goal and tie the score at 1-1.

From there, the Blue Hens surged ahead with four straight goals including two by McCartney, the second of which put Temple in a 5-1 hole.

McCartney's second goal was scored with 19 minutes left in the half, and would be Delaware's last until after the break. The Owls picked up the pace in a big way and closed the half on a 4-0 run. At the midway point of the half, Parcell recorded her first assist on a goal by Nicole Tiernan, and Tiernan's sister Megan scored at 9:07 on a free-position shot to bring Temple within two.

Parcell drove through the defense again with seven and a half minutes remaining to narrow the deficit to one, and she got her fourth point of the game just over a minute later with a great pass to Pinkerton who scored to tie the game at 5-5. The Blue Hens had a chance to take the lead on a free-position shot with six seconds left in the first half, but the shot sailed wide and the tie score stood through halftime.

The Owls' momentum quickly disappeared at the start of the second half. Two quick goals for McCartney started what became a 6-0 run for the Blue Hens, putting them ahead 11-5 with 15:38 remaining.

Tabor finally gave Temple some life with back-to-back goals at 13:53 and 12:26, but her second goal was followed by McCartney's fifth goal of the game. Delaware got another one back on a score by Fay with just over seven minutes remaining.

The flurry of scoring continued, first with Parcell's third goal of the game at 6:49. Unfortunately, Fay and McCartney scored within 11 seconds of each other immediately following Parcell's goal, putting the Blue Hens on top by seven goals, 15-8.

In the final four minutes, Temple got a goal apiece from Pinkerton, Charlotte Swavola and Parcell in a furious comeback attempt, but it ultimately fell short. With 44 seconds left, a free-position shot by Pinkerton was saved by Delaware goalkeeper Alex Zaugra.

Temple will now move into the Atlantic 10 portion of its schedule, and will start with a 3:00 p.m. game at Saint Joseph's on Friday, March 29.
