PHILADELPHIA (Hagan Arena) – Forty minutes of its best defensive effort all season led Temple women's basketball to a 48-47 upset of Charlotte in the Atlantic 10 Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday evening. The 10th-seeded Owls (14-17) now advance to a Sunday semifinal game at 4:00 p.m. against Fordham, 65-48 winners over Saint Louis. The game will be aired LIVE on CBS Sports Network.
Second-seeded Charlotte was handed just its fifth loss all season by Temple, and will await its postseason fate with a record of 24-5. The win by the Owls avenged a regular-season, 66-43 loss at Charlotte back on Feb. 6.
Rateska Brown scored a career-high 23 points to lead Temple, and hit an impressive 5-of-7 from behind the arc as well as 6-of-7 at the free throw line. Tyonna Williams also scored in double figures with 14. Natasha Thames and Victoria Macaulay pulled down 11 rebounds apiece, and seven of those were offensive rebounds for each of them.
Temple's offensive output was its lowest in a win this season, and the Owls shot just 25 percent from the field which was actually a season-low. The difference was entirely on the defensive end, as the Owls' held Charlotte to just 32 percent shooting and a season-low 47 points.
“I felt like that was a great team effort,” said head coach Tonya Cardoza. “We needed everything from everybody, and I felt like no matter what the situation, the biggest thing was just like yesterday- we stayed together. There were times we might not have scored but we did a heck of a job on the defensive end. (Charlotte) averages 67 points, and to hold them to 47 is unbelievable.”
The game saw eight ties, but Temple never trailed in the final nine minutes. The final tie came at 43-43 with 1:34 remaining, but Williams hit a three-pointer after a timeout to give the Owls the lead for good.
Brown was sent to the line with the Owls ahead by one and 22 seconds on the clock. She hit both ends of a 1-and-1 for a three-point lead, making the 49ers' two-point jumper in the final seconds not enough.
There were four ties in the first half, but Temple held the lead for nearly the rest of the time. The Owls out-rebounded Charlotte 25-20, winning the battle of the glass against a team that has averaged eight more rebounds than its opponents' this season. The rebounding edge was still evident on the final stat sheet, 43-41.
The offense was slow in arriving for both teams, particularly for the Owls who hit just one of their first 11 shots from the field. Brown broke that drought with back-to-back three-pointers within 20 seconds of each other near the 12-minute mark, putting Temple ahead 11-7.
Brown's third trey of the game with 6:34 left in the opening half gave Temple its largest lead of five points, 18-13. The 49ers used a 7-2 run to tie the score at 20-20 with just over two minutes remaining, and there would be just one more bucket the rest of the way.
The final points of the half came on a layup from Macaulay in the final seconds, sending the Owls into the break up 22-20. She had eight rebounds to lead all players at the half, along with eight points. Brown led all players with 11 points and shot 3-of-5 from three-point range.
Charlotte's Jennifer Hailey, honored as the A-10 Player of the Year before the game, was held to zero points in the first half and made only four attempts. For the game, Hailey went just 1-of-6 from the field, scored five points and grabbed seven boards.
After taking a five-point lead early in the second half, Temple went cold for a stretch as Charlotte used a 9-0 run to lead by four, 29-25 at 15:19. The Owls picked up the pace, and three ties followed in the next seven minutes of action.
Brown repeated her first-half heroics with another set of back-to-back treys on consecutive possessions near the eight-minute mark. The second of those capped a 9-0 run that put the Owls on top by seven, and they would not trail again. Charlotte's Hillary Sigmon hit a trey with 1:34 left to tie the game for a final time, but Williams' trey after a timeout put the Owls back in the lead.
