Matt Gwilliam Resigns As Women's Soccer Head Coach

4.16.13 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA Temple University women's soccer head coach Matt Gwilliam has announced his resignation after guiding the program for the past two seasons (2011-2012).

In his first season at the reigns, he coached the team to five shutouts, which was the most by a Temple team since 1995. His 2012 defense proved to be even more impermeable, as it inked seven clean sheets in net, which helped the Owls' goalkeepers to the eighth-best save percentage in the nation (.875).

Gwilliam led the Owls to back-to-back five-win seasons and guided them to two conference wins in both seasons.

In his first season with the Owls, he helped his team to its highest finish in the Atlantic 10 standings since 1999. He compiled an overall record of 10-24-4

Gwilliam mentored three all-conference honorees during his time with the Owls, including three-time All-Atlantic 10 selection Niki Conn, a senior forward on the 2011 squad. Among the 15 freshmen from his first recruiting class, which was the most rookies on a Division I team in 2012, defender Erin Lafferty and goalkeeper Shauni Kerkhoff were named to the A-10 All-Rookie team.

Temple finished the 2012 season with a 5-12-3 record, 2-6-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play.
