4.26.13 | Football

On May 12, team TUFF ® [Temple University Football Family] will participate in the 2013 Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure. This week the four team captains—Cathy Bongiovi, Evan Regas, Julie Rhule, and Matt Rhule—will share their stories why this cause is so important.

My Mom—Donna Nibert

by Julie Rhule

Participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure over the past few years, and particularly this year, is very touching to me.  I still remember where I was the day I learned my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago.  I was sitting at the beach in Cape May with dear friends, and it felt like my world was coming to an end.

My mother has been my rock, a true inspiration, and my touch stone.  She has always been there for me in the good times and bad.  While I knew breast cancer was a physical battle only she could fight, it was emotional battle I was very much a part of.  I felt helpless at times but continued to drive to Montoursville, Pa., to be by her side through all the surgeries, etc.   While draining at times, I would be remiss not to mention the great support I received from my Temple family throughout my mother's battle.  Faculty, staff, co-workers, and students supported me with kind words, prayers, tears, and hugs.

This will be the first Mother's Day I will be celebrating without my mother by my side.  While this brings tears to my eyes even as I'm writing, I still hold onto all the special memories I have. In September my mother, Donna Cheryl Nibert, lost her battle with cancer.

My goal is to continue to honor her legacy the best way I can –CONTINUE THE FIGHT / BATTLE FOR A CURE / AND STAY TUFF for anyone out there who has been diagnosed, is currently battling, or is a survivor.

I hope you will find it in your heart to support this worthy cause any way you see fit by either walking or donating money.  Through these funds my hope is that a better future will be created for generations to come.   Bryant will be running, and Vivienne will be pushed in a stroller this year, honoring their special Grammy who loved them so much.  I will be uplifting and remembering my Mother all along the path and especially reminiscing about the year she came to Philadelphia to walk the Race with me together hand in hand.
